Whenever TaylorMade Golf launches a new set of clubs, I anxiously await my chance to get them out on the course for a test-drive. The last full set of TaylorMade clubs I tested – the RSi irons—were so good that I quickly added them to my bag on a permanent basis. And they have never let me down (my swing has, certainly, but never the clubs!)
So when TaylorMade announced the new M2 irons and woods, I took on the air of an expectant father, pacing the hallways in anticipation of something exciting in the immediate future.
As expected, the new M2 doesn’t disappoint.
The M2 are game improvement irons, designed for golfers who need to get maximum distance and trajectory, while also delivering great forgiveness and feel. Fortunately, there are no compromises, so players of all levels can benefit from these sleek and stylish clubs.
In creating the M2 irons, engineers employed some really cool features, including the company’s patented Speed Pocket technology. The Speed Pocket is a small slot in the sole of the iron to improve shots struck low on the face of the iron. This helps activate the lower portion of the face by minimising speed reduction and creating higher launch on shots hit below centre. This increases the size of the sweet spot vertically. And a bigger sweet spot is always a good thing!
Shot after shot, these irons were absolute beauties, giving me exceptional distance and a high peak trajectory. The long irons are among the longest irons I’ve ever hit—and though that is partially due to the stronger lofts, there is no denying that the ball absolutely flies off the clubface. And the short- and mid-irons produced some eye-popping approaches that stopped on a dime, many within tap-in distance of the pin. Absolute gold!
M2 Metalwoods
The M2 Metalwoods, too, offer massive distance gains, with plenty of forgiveness. For players like me, this is especially important off the tee, as my less-than-consistent swing can result in tee shots leading me to many previously undiscovered parts of the course.
Building on the success of its predecessor, the M1, the new M2 product line feature weight savings from the carbon crown—with the discretionary weight moved to the sole of the club, resulting in a low and slightly farther back centre of gravity. What does this mean? A screaming hot trajectory, a massive sweet spot and heaps of forgiveness.
At address, the M2 metalwoods—Driver, Fairway and hybrids—all look and feel like a high-performance club should. Well balanced and light, they inspire confidence, and give you the sense that you are going to hit the ball like TaylorMade staffer Jason Day, who relied on TaylorMade clubs in his PGA Championship victory last year.
While few of us can hit it like Jason, one thing’s for sure: having these M2 clubs in our bag can get us a few steps closer. They are the most forgiving and exciting TaylorMade clubs I’ve ever tested. And they are definitely worth a test drive if you’re looking for more distance and playability!
