Moriya Jutanugarn fires 68 to lead 2nd round at Evian major

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand shot 3-under 68 to lead in the Evian Championship second round on Saturday, and could join her younger sister Ariya in the golf majors record book.

Seeking to be the first sisters to both win majors, Jutanugarn’s 9-under total was four shots clear of three players in the clubhouse, including Jennifer Song of the United States, whose 65 was best among the morning starters.

China’s Shanshan Feng and American Angela Stanford were also on 5 under after carding 68s.

Victory on Sunday for the 23-year-old Moriya would make the Jutanugarns the first sisters to win majors since the LPGA was founded 67 years ago.

The 21-year-old Ariya Jutanugarn, who was top-ranked this season, won the 2016 Women’s British Open.

”I probably don’t feel that bad playing on the golf course rather than watching my sister play,” said Moriya Jutanugarn, who recalled feeling ”nervous, excited” last year when finishing her round to watch Ariya win at W..

Moriya Jutanugarn leads at Evian, aims at majors record

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand shot 3-under 68 to lead the Evian Championship second round on Saturday, and could join her younger sister Ariya in golf’s record book.

Seeking to be the first sisters to win a major title, Moriya’s 9-under total left her one shot ahead of Ayako Uehara of Japan, who had seven birdies in her round of 66.

The leading group on Sunday is completed by Katherine Kirk of Australia, who carded a 69 to trail Moriya by two strokes. All three playing partners will seek their first major.

Victory for Moriya – who has a career-best finish of 10th at a major – would make the Jutanugarns the first sisters to win a major since the U.S. LPGA Tour was founded 67 years ago.

Ariya, who was top-ranked this season, won the 2016 Women’s British Open.

Flesch, Smith share PGA Champions Tour lead in Victoria (Sep 15, 2017)

VICTORIA, British Columbia (AP) Steve Flesch and Jerry Smith each shot 7-under 64 on Friday to share the first-round lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ Pacific Links Bear Mountain Championship.

Flesh is making his 12th senior start after turning 50 in late May.

”It’s kind of an awkward golf course off the tee, so you need to be decisive about what club you are going to hit and if you can hit it in the right places, you can make some birdies,” Flesch said. ”You have to pay attention out there. There are some tough tee shots out there and some awkward greens, so you can’t put yourself in the wrong place.”

The four-time PGA Tour winner had four birdies in a five-hole stretch on Bear Mountain’s Mountain Course and capped the bogey-free round with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

”I hit a lot of good tee shots and set myself up for a lot of short irons,” Flesh said. ”I didn’t make a lot of putts early one, but I got it going in the middle of the round and ran off a few. It surprised me how ..

Leishman backs up good start with a low score at BMW

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) Marc Leishman has a short memory when it comes to golf, which only helped him at the BMW Championship.

He forgot all about that 62 in the opening round.

He was nearly just as good Friday with a 7-under 64 to open a three-shot lead over Jason Day and Rickie Fowler going into the weekend at Conway Farms.

”I really took that as a challenge today, to not take it for granted that you’re just going to make birdies,” Leishman said. ”You still have to earn every birdie. I think when you do get ahead of yourself, that’s when bad stuff can happen.”

There was plenty of good stuff from the guys chasing him in the third FedEx Cup playoff event.

Day, who has gone 16 months since his last victory, chipped in from behind the 14th green for his second eagle of the week, and then added a third eagle with one swing. He made a hole-in-one on the 17th hole with a 7-iron that turned into a payoff for multiple parties.

It carried day to a 65, putting him in the last group o..

Leishman backs up good start with a low score at BMW

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) Marc Leishman followed his great start with another low score, a 7-under 64 that gave him a three-shot lead over Jason Day and Rickie Fowler going into the weekend at the BMW Championship.

Day made a hole-in-one Friday for his third eagle of the week at Conway Farms in his round of 65. Fowler holed out a chip for eagle on the 14th hole.

Leishman also got in on the act. He turned a tough par into an unlikely birdie on the par-4 seventh hole when he hit into the native grass, chipped out to the fairway and hit a pitch-and-run from 50 yards that he holed for birdie.

Leishman, who opened with a 62, was at 16-under 126.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson struggled again and was 16 shots behind.

Day takes a baby step with a big round at BMW Championship

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) Jason Day made his first hole-in-one in nine years, shot a 6-under 65 and goes into the weekend at the BMW Championship with a chance to end 16 months without a victory.

It was a big day for more than just the 29-year-old Australian on Friday.

By becoming the first player to make an ace at Conway Farms this week, BMW contributed $100,000 to the Evans Scholars Foundation that will pay for a four-year tuition. Day also won a car and, not long after signing his card, he decided to donate that to the foundation to pay for another full scholarship.

Day said it didn’t matter that he has a sponsorship deal with Lexus and really didn’t need another car.

”I’m in a fortunate position, being able to not only impact one person but be able to impact another person’s life,” Day said.

It was a feel-good moment in charity, and on the scorecard.

Day began the year at No. 1 in the world with a goal of staying there all the way through December. Instead, he gave up the ..

John Lackey flips out on umpire, gets tossed along with catcher Wilson Contreras

No one has ever accused John Lackey of being a level-headed pitcher, or human for that matter. But even for him, this was a meltdown for the ages.
On Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field, Lackey got the start in the first game of an important series with the division-rival St. Louis Cardinals, who they hold a three-game lead over in the NL Central. Lackey is no stranger to playoff-like atmospheres, so chances are he was even more fired up than his normal, already insane self when he took the mound in Chicago.
In the top of the fifth inning, Lackey took exception with a called ball by the home plate umpire on a close pitch. Even after the ump kept his cool by not tossing him, the veteran pitcher wasn't done. On the next pitch, Cardinals' pitcher Carlos Martinez ripped an RBI single to right center field to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead, and that's when Lackey lost it. Check out the whole, wild sequence from a few different angles:

Stalter shoots 67, leads by 1 at weather-affected KLM Open

SPIJK, Netherlands (AP) Joel Stalter of France shot a 4-under 67 to take a one-stroke clubhouse lead at the KLM Open before bad light suspended play with nearly half the field still to complete their second rounds.

Stalter followed up his opening-round 65 to move to 10 under par on Friday and stay in contention for a first victory in his first year on the European Tour. He has already rolled in 14 birdies at The Dutch this week.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand was alone in second place after a 65. Former No. 1 Lee Westwood also shot 65, containing six birdies and no dropped shots, and was three shots back.

With Thursday’s afternoon session wiped out by bad weather, the tournament was playing catch-up. Seventy players in the remaining field of 148 didn’t finish their second rounds Friday.

Defending champion Joost Luiten was 2 under after 12 holes of his second round. He is currently tied for 82nd on 2 over par and fighting to make the weekend.
