Wiesberger, Finch lead in rain-hit first round of KLM Open (Sep 14, 2017)

SPIJK, Netherlands (AP) Bernd Wiesberger and Richard Finch have shot 5-under-par 66s to share the clubhouse lead after a rain-shortened opening round at the KLM Open. The leaders were among the early starters on Thursday and avoided the worst of the wind and driving rain that later flooded fairways and forced a suspension of play at the par-71 The Dutch course. The first round will resume early Friday.

Wayne Gretzky’s clubhead speed is EXACTLY what you’d think it would be

Photo by Jeff Gross/Getty ImagesThis is just too perfect. Wayne Gretzky, AKA The Great One, AKA 99, hit a tee shot on a hole with a radar set up at Wednesday's BMW Championship Pro-Am. His clubhead speed? You guess it. 99.

Austin Johnson, brother and caddie for World No. 1 Dustin Johnson — who you've probably heard is engaged to Gretzky's daughter, Paulina — captured the moment:

Gretzky also nearly hit his famed hockey jersey number at Golf Digest's 2010 U.S. Open Challenge at Pebble Beach. Gretzky thought he had broken 100 — the goal of the four participants — by one, but a triple bogey on 18 actually put him at 100 on the nose. Bummer.
Gretzky, the NHL's all-time leading scorer, was never known for a blazing slapshot so him failing to hit triple digits on the radar gun in the pro-am isn't a surprise. That's still pretty good speed for a 56-ye..

Play scrapped at rain-hit women’s major, will start Friday

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France (AP) Rain and strong winds have forced Thursday’s play to be scrapped at the final women’s golf major of the season, which will start afresh on Friday as a 54-hole event.

LPGA Tour Commissioner Michael Whan said what the little play was achieved Thursday morning at the Evian Championship is wiped from the record.

Whan announced the abandonment at 2:30 p.m. (1230 GMT) almost 4 1/2 hours after players had been called off the wind-swept course overlooking Lake Geneva.

”Nobody even played half a round,” Whan said, adding that a 54-hole championship finishing Sunday offered the ”cleanest, fairest, most competitive” option.

”We know that if we said 72 holes and we start again tomorrow (Friday), we’re probably looking at Monday and Tuesday, and that’s not great for anyone,” Whan said.

Forecast weather is for ”pretty good” playing conditions for the next two days and some more rain Sunday, Whan said, noting that 45 mph (72 kph) gusts were experienced Thursday…

You have to see this woman’s crazy — but effective — golf swing to believe it

It’s easy to find videos of unusual and awful golf swings out there. Heck, have you actually tried watching your own swing? It’s probably not pretty. But rare is the hideous swing that actually works. Enter this lady who played in the Web.com Tour’s Albertson Boise Open pro-am on Wednesday.
RELATED: We need to talk about Michael Jordan's awful golf swing
We don’t know her name, but we know she has one of the most unorthodox golf swings we’ve ever seen in which she turns her body perpendicular to her original line before lunging at the ball. And yet, she crushes it off the tee, according to playing partner and tour pro Steve Wheatcroft, who shared this remarkable video as proof:

That is a pure strike. It’s reminiscent of former MLB pitcher Luis Tiant, who used to turn his back to home plate before spinning around and hurling a pitch.
Obviously, no PGA pro would teach this woman’s action, but she does some nice things that cau..

Bae has 3-over 74 in return to golf after 2-year army duty

INCHEON, South Korea (AP) Sangmoon Bae’s first round of tournament golf after a compulsory stint in the South Korean army was a 3-over 74 Thursday in the opening round of the Asian Tour’s Donghae Open.

Bae was 3-over after his first nine holes on the par-71 Bear’s Best Cheongna Golf Club. After two birdies and a bogey early on the back nine, he bogeyed the par-3 17th to put him back to 3-over, nine strokes behind first-round leaders and fellow South Koreans Kang Kyung-nam and Kim Jun-sung, who had 65s.

Bae, whose last pro tournament was at the 2015 Presidents Cup in South Korea, was discharged from military service in August after spending almost two years as a rifleman.

He won the U.S. PGA Tour’s Byron Nelson Championship in 2013 and the Frys.com Open in 2014.

Player of the year gets clarity on 2 tours

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) This week in golf should go a long way toward determining player of the year.

And not just on the PGA Tour.

Lexi Thompson winning in Indianapolis last week tightened the race in the LPGA Tour’s points-based system. So Yeon Ryu, who counts a major among her two victories this year, is leading at 150 points. Thompson, who lost on that major at the ANA Inspiration by being penalized four shots for not replacing her golf ball properly on the green, is a mere three points behind.

Still very much in the mix are LPGA rookie Sung Hyun Park, who won the U.S. Women’s Open, and Women’s British Open champion I.K. Kim, who leads the tour with three victories. Points are awarded based on top 10s, and the points are double this week at The Evian Championship, the final major of the year.

On the PGA Tour, all signs point to Justin Thomas.

He won at the TPC Boston two weeks ago for his fifth victory of the year to go along with the PGA Championship . The PGA Tour award ..

Spieth leading FedEx Cup by giving himself chances

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) Jordan Spieth already has won 14 times around the world, which already places him in unique territory. Over the last 75 years, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are the only other players to have at least 10 victories and three majors before turning 25.

That’s only part of the Spieth profile.

Nearly as impressive are the 15 times he has finished runner-up, which Spieth sees more as opportunity than any measure of failure.

”I know you’re indifferent when you’re asking the question, but I think of it positively,” he said Wednesday. ”There’s been that many tournaments that I’ve been in the thick of things and truly had a chance to win.”

That includes the last two FedEx Cup playoff events.

Spieth lost in a playoff on Long Island when Dustin Johnson smashed a 343-yard drive and a hit a wedge to 4 feet for birdie. Then, he was tied for the lead at the TPC Boston with five holes to play until Spieth missed two greens with long irons and Justin Thomas didn’t miss h..
