Texas’ footprint in Southern California golf circles is legendary and growing, the latter courtesy of the University of Texas’ Sophia Schubert, who won the U.S. Women’s Amateur in San Diego on Sunday.
A Longhorn sweep of the amateurs now is in play, as Doug Ghim, a Texas senior, advanced to the quarter-finals of the U.S. Amateur at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Thursday.
Ghim defeated Sahith Theegala on the 19th hole in the morning, then beat Joey Vrzich, 3 & 2, in the round of 16 in the afternoon.
Riviera is known as Hogan’s Alley (not to be confused with the Hogan’s Alley at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas) by virtue of the Texas' native's three victories in two years there, including the 1947 U.S. Open. Moreover, the University of Texa..
Matt Every shoots 61, leads Henrik Stenson by one shot at Wyndham Championship
Jared C. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)On the opening hole of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., Matt Every holed out from 105 yards for an eagle. Surely, it would be all down hill from there. Not quite. Every would go on to shoot the low round of his career on Thursday, a bogey-free, nine-under 61 to take a one shot lead over Henrik Stenson.
Every, 33, followed up his eagle with seven more birdies on his round, four of which helped him make the turn in six-under 29. The two-time PGA Tour winner was dialed in, hitting 17 of 18 greens and holing just 51 feet of putts. Coming into the week, the Florida native was 183rd in the FedEx Cup Standings, meaning he will almost certainly need to win or finish in s..
Power-pairing Thompson and Kerr out first for U.S. in Solheim Cup
Stuart Franklin(Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images)DES MOINES, Iowa — The pairings for the first matches of the 2017 Solheim Cup have been announced. After being shut out in 2011 and 2013, the Americans won in 2015. Here at Des Moines Golf Club, the number of USA chants that have been echoing through the grandstands during the practice rounds are a constant reminder that the Americans are defending on home soil. Both teams have rookies on their rosters, but the first tee shot, historically a loud, energetic and intense moment, will be handled by Solheim Cup veterans for both teams.

Heavily-favored U.S. staying humble, focused ahead of Solheim Cup
Stuart Franklin(Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images)DES MOINES, Iowa — On paper, the American Solheim Cup team is stronger than the European club. The Americans are defending after winning in 2015 in Germany. They have three women who have won on tour this year, while just one Euro player (Anna Nordqvist) has found the winner's circle. Worse, the European team took a major early-week blow when Solheim Cup veteran Suzann Pettersen removed herself from the team due to injury. She was replaced by Catriona Matthew, currently ranked 97th in the world.
Nevertheless, the Americans have no feeling of ease the afternoon before the matches start.
FacebookPinterestStuart Franklin“It doesn’t matter who we’re playing against,” said Stacy Lewis, who’s playing in her fourth Solheim Cup. “Catriona is just as tough of a player as Suzann is. I don’t care what rankings or anything say. That’s the hardest part about match play – rankings don’t matter.”
The sentiment is echoed by U.S. Captain Juli ..
Judge stops sale of Masters green jackets — for now
Sports Illustrated/Getty ImagesJust days after Augusta National Inc. — the company that owns Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters tournament — filed a federal lawsuit to stop the auctioning off of three green jackets, a judge ruled in its favor. At least, for now.
The Augusta Chronicle reported on Thursday that U.S. District Chief Judge Randal Hall granted a request to temporarily keep Green Jacket Auctions from selling the items in question. The memorabilia company had previously begun an auction on Aug. 2 for a collection of items, including three green jackets — one of which it says was owned by two-time Masters champ Byron Nelson. Judge Hall's decision was based on his belief that ultimately, the jackets are property of the club.
