Thomas captures PGA
Through three days — and frankly, most of Sunday — the 2017 PGA Championship lacked the pizzazz displayed by its major brethren this season. Luckily, the same could not be said for the final three hours, as Justin Thomas' sterling charge broke away from a crowded pack for a resounding victory at Quail Hollow.
Thomas, who began his day two back of Kevin Kisner, had a handful of “How'd he do that?” birdies: a 36-foot drain on the ninth, an eight-footer than sat on the cup's edge for seemingly an eternity before droppin..

PGA Championship 2017: Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley weren’t going to miss seeing one of their own break through

He’s played it a time or two, waiting by the 18th green as Jordan Spieth or Rickie Fowler or another close friend claimed various tournament titles. It was only natural then that when it came Thomas’ turn to grab the heavy hardware, the 24-year-old winning the PGA Championship by two strokes on Sunday, his buddies were there to share the moment and have J.T.’s back.
Watching by the final hole at Quail Hollow Club on Sunday, clad in T-shirts and jeans, were Spieth and Fowler, along with Thomas’ roommate, fellow University of Alabama golfer Bud Cauley. As Thomas walked off with a closing 68, the hugs from the buds were real and meaningful. And they were there again outside the scoring area for another round of congratulations.

A frustrated Patrick Reed after his first major top-10: “I play to win”

Streeter LeckaCHARLOTTE, NC – AUGUST 13: Patrick Reed of the United States reacts to a missed putt on the 18th green during the final round of the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club on August 13, 2017 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)CHARLOTTE – Any mention of consolation prizes Sunday in the 99th PGA Championship left Patrick Reed with dyspepsia rather than helping assuage his searing disappointment.
First top-10 in a major? Meh.
Handling the pressure of being in the hunt on Sunday? No big deal.
Moving closer to locking up a Presidents Cup berth? Shrug.
“I couldn’t care less if I finished second or 50th. I play to win,” Reed said, wiping sweat from his brow after he shot a 4-under 67, tying the low final round at Quail Hollow Club, to join Francesco Molinari and Louis Oosthuizen as runners-up behind winner Justin Thomas. “All I feel is that I could have done more. I just feel frustration.”
Primarily known for his impassioned disposition in te..

Does Justin Thomas’ PGA win make him a lock for Player of the Year?

Sam GreenwoodCHARLOTTE, NC – AUGUST 13: Justin Thomas of the United States reacts to his birdie putt on the 13th green during the final round of the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club on August 13, 2017 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Sam Greenwood/Getty Images)When the FedEx Cup Playoffs were introduced in the summer of 2007, one selling point was the clarity it would provide in determining a Player of the Year. Maybe. But even before the first ball is struck in the four-tournament Playoffs that begin in 11 days on Long Island, it will be difficult for anyone to surpass Justin Thomas.
Although Thomas' win in the PGA Championship Sunday was his first major title and his first win in the mainland U.S., it comes in the midst of what has already been a breakthrough 2016-17 season. After successfully defending his title in the CIMB Classic in Malaysia in the fall, Thomas opened 2017 with two resounding wins in Hawaii, the latter featuring the seventh 59 ever shot on th..

PGA Championship 2017: Justin Thomas wins one for the family

Stuart Franklin(Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty Images)CHARLOTTE — The PGA of America is fond of saying, “Behind every good player is a club pro.” The same can be said for men and fathers. In the case of Justin Thomas, they are one and the same.
Justin's father, Mike, has been the head professional at Harmony Landing outside Louisville for almost three decades. His grandpa, Paul, was also a club pro, serving in Zanesville, Ohio. The PGA is in Thomas' blood, making his victory at Quail Hollow poetically apropos.
“I can't put it into words,” Thomas said after his round. “It is (terrific), and to have dad here, and let alone a PGA, but to have him here…it's great. It really is.”
Thomas is far from the first son of a PGA professional to win the Wanamaker; he's actually the eighth player to do so. Conversely, Thomas' family bond with the game has always been at the forefront of his story.
When his father was busy giving lessons or tending the shop, Justin woul..
