Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesCHARLOTTE — They speak of Southern hospitality a lot in these parts, but you won’t find much of a warm welcome when it comes to the new first hole they’ve rolled out at Quail Hollow Club for the PGA Championship.
Where once players were greeted with a 418-yard par 4 for the annual Wells Fargo Championship, Tom Fazio’s redesigned opener is playing a stout 524 yards, but still goes by a par 4.
Just how ornery has it gotten? In round one, it yielded 11 birdies and round two, just four, the fewest of any hole. Come Saturday’s third round, it upped the ante for difficulty. Of the 75 golfers who made the cut, 42 made pars, 30 made bogeys, three made double bogeys … and nobody made a birdie. Nada. Zero. Zilch.
“One could be the toughest opening hole in golf,” said Jim Furyk early in the week. “It actually looks like a really nice par 5 to me, but for some reason they put par 4 on the card.”
He’s sort of right. The hole is a par 5 for the members, and even has a back..

The Aussie came into this week’s PGA Championship 61st in the points standings, but because he is skipping the first two events to be in Australia with his wife for the birth of the couple’s second child he needed a high finish at Quail Hollow. Only the top 70 reach the third leg of the postseason.
Instead, Scott shot 76 Friday to make the cut on the number at five over, 13 shots off the lead. There was still a chance for him to climb the leaderboard, but on Saturday he stumbled to a 74, with two doubles and two bogeys sandwiched around three birdies. That trio will tee off at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with all eyes on the next PGA champion coming out of that group.
That being said, there is a ton of golf left to play. And no one in the top 20 is out of this. 2010 Open champ Louis Oosthuizen is just three back and capable of catching fire. He tees off with Francesco Molinari after Molinari's second-round 64, and Chris Stroud, whose consistent 68s have him just two back.
