Bubba Watson wins Match Play title in blowout

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Bubba Watson made the final of the Dell Technologies Match Play look as though he were on vacation all along.

Watson won his second World Golf Championships title Sunday with the biggest blowout since the championship matched switched to 18 holes in 2011, a 7-and-6 victory over Kevin Kisner.

Watson wasn’t as sharp as he was in the semifinals against Justin Thomas, whom he beat in 16 holes to deny Thomas going to No. 1 in the world ranking. He didn’t have to be in the final. If not for missing a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 sixth, Watson would have won the first seven holes.

Kisner had a lot to do with that. After escaping in 19 holes against Alex Noren in his semifinal match, Kisner didn’t put up much of a fight. He made four straight bogeys and only twice on the front nine was putting for birdie.

Watson had scheduled a family vacation out of the country on Sunday, which he had to postpone. Watson figured he hardly ever makes it th..

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) Steve Stricker pulled away on the back nine Sunday at Fallen Oak to win the Rapiscan Systems Classic for his second straight PGA Tour Champions victory.

The 51-year-old Stricker closed with a 4-under 68, birdieing all four par-5 holes on the Tom Fazio-designed layout with big and fast greens. He finished at 11-under 205 for a three-stroke victory over Billy Andrade.

”Anytime you’re trying to win a golf tournament, it’s challenging and tough,” Stricker said. ”You’ve got nerves to deal with, and when things don’t go well you think that you’re not going to win. You’ve got to ride that emotional roller coaster and it was no different today. It was good to come down the stretch and hit the shots that I needed to hit down the stretch and finish it off the way I should.”

The 34-year-old Garnett, a two-time winner last year on the Web.com Tour, finished at 18-under 270. He opened with a 63 and added rounds of 69 and 70.

LeBron James may have ended two lives with his latest posterizing dunk

When my colleague and proud carrier of LeBron James' water Alex Myers messaged me King James' latest posterizing dunk, my immediate thought was that it must have happened last night and I completely missed it while watching Leonard Hamilton murder everyone that bet Michigan -4.5. At the rate LeBron has been defying father time with his dunks this season, it's hard to keep up with each one. See here and here for examples.
But I'm happy to report that his latest just occurred in a sleepy Sunday afternoon game against the lowly Brooklyn Nets. Hopefully, this is the first you're seeing of what may possibly be his best dunk to date, in which he ends two lives in one slam:

Watson wins, denies Thomas No. 1 ranking

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Bubba Watson was in high spirits for someone with such low expectations at the Dell Technologies Match Play.

Walking to the sixth tee, already 2 up in his semifinal match against Justin Thomas, he smiled and said, ”Just remember, I was beating No. 1 at some point.” Thomas only had to win that match to reach No. 1 in the world, and Watson figured that’s what would happen.

It was about the only thing he got wrong Sunday.

Article continues below …

Watson denied Thomas with a brand of golf that was close to flawless, and then he made the final look as though he were on vacation all along. Watson won his second World Golf Championship with the biggest blowout since the title match switched to 18 holes in 2011, a 7-and-6 victory over Kevin Kisner.

He sure didn’t expect to play only 28 holes in two matches on the final day at Austin Country Club, lead after every one of them, and pose with the trophy.

”There’s stories all different directions that didn’t go the way ..

Watson wins, denies Thomas No. 1 ranking

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Bubba Watson rewrote the script Sunday morning by reaching the final for the first time in the Dell Technologies Match Play and keeping Justin Thomas from going to No. 1 in the world.

Watson never trailed from the opening hole in their semifinal match at Austin Country Club, and he pulled away early on the back nine. Thomas didn’t make a birdie putt until No. 9, and the only other putt he made was at the end of the match when Watson had 3 feet for birdie to win, 3 and 2.

Watson advanced to an all-Georgia Bulldogs final against Kevin Kisner, who outlasted the putting-challenged Alex Noren in 19 holes.

Article continues below …

The scenario was familiar to Watson. The only other time he had reached the semifinals of Match Play was in 2011 at Dove Mountain in Arizona when the reigning PGA champion, Martin Kaymer, beat him to reach No. 1 in the world.

Watson was in good spirits for this match, and after a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 5 to go 2 up, he walked to the t..
