54-year-old Laura Davies shoots 9-under 63 in Founders Cup

PHOENIX (AP) Laura Davies took a satisfying look at the scoreboard next to the 18th green. At 54 years old, and nearly 17 years since her last LPGA Tour victory, the Hall of Famer had a share of the lead halfway through the third round of the Founders Cup.

”I said to my caddie, `Jeez, I haven’t been on top of the leaderboard for a long time,”’ Davies said. ”That’s nice, obviously. You got to stay there. That’s the biggest challenge.”

The Englishwoman shot a 9-under 63 on Saturday at Desert Ridge, her best score on the tour since another 63 in the third round of the 2005 Wendy’s Championship for Children. She has shot 62 twice.

”If you’ve had one good round it’s hard to back it up, but I’ll certainly have a crack at it,” Davies said. ”At least I’ve given myself a chance now.”

Davies birdied five of the final six holes on the front nine, made a 6-foot eagle putt on the par-5 11th and birdied the par-5 15th in the bogey-free round.

Stenson takes 1-shot lead at Bay Hill; Woods 5 back

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Henrik Stenson gets his third chance in four years to finally win the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the final hour Saturday reminded him it won’t be easy.

Part of that feeling came from three putts he narrowly missed – two for birdie, one for eagle – that could have given him some separation going into the final round at Bay Hill. Stenson settled for a 1-under 71 that gave him a one-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau, who missed a few chances of his own in a round of 72.

And part of that feeling was seeing some of the names suddenly in the mix.

Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy made an eagle and birdied two of his last three holes, dropping a wedge into 3 feet on the 18th for a 67 to finish two shots behind. Former U.S. Open champion Justin Rose outplayed Tiger Woods before another raucous gallery, posting a 67 that left him three behind.

”I think that I didn’t really miss a shot the last six holes,” said Stenson, who was at 12-un..

UConn women beat St. Francis by 88 points, cover 50.5-point spread with ease

Tim Clayton – CorbisRegardless of how you feel about the dominance of the UConn women's basketball program, there's no denying just how impressive Geno Auriemma's squad is year in and year out. On Saturday, the No. 1 overall seeded Huskies began their latest push for a 12th national title, facing off with 16-seeded St. Francis (PA). Let's just say this wasn't exactly UMBC vs. Virginia.
No, the only upset in this game would have been if UConn hadn't covered the astronomical 50.5-point spread, or 54 if you believe Darren Rovell. Whatever it was, not only did they cover it, but they covered it with ease, winning by 88 points to “survive and advance” to the second round:

Look, if you're betting on women's hoops in the first place, get help. Actually, you might be a genius, because betting on the female Huskies every game is the lock of the century and I'm not sure why I don't do it…

Cydney Clanton eagles par-4 13th, takes Founders Cup lead

PHOENIX (AP) Cydney Clanton took the lead into the weekend at the Founders Cup. She knows what she has to do to have a chance for her first LPGA Tour victory.

”You just have to go in attack mode, because everybody else is going to go in attack mode,” Clanton said.

She was aggressive on the back nine Friday at Desert Ridge, taking dead aim at the back left pin on the par-4 13th and holing out for eagle from 72 yards. The ball flew into the cup on the first bounce.

”It’s pretty special to hole out,” Clanton said. ”Any time you don’t have to putt it’s nice.”

Clanton shot a 5-under 67, playing the back nine in 5-under 31 to reach 9-under 135. She also birdied the par-5 11th and 15th and the par-4 18th. Winless on the LPGA Tour, the 28-year-old former Auburn player’s lone bogey came on the par-4 third after a penalty stoke because her ball moved.

”It was unfortunate,” Clanton said. ”In my head I didn’t actually make a bogey today.”

The final minute of the Marshall-Wichita State game took nearly 20 minutes. Yes, really

Donald MiralleIf day one of the NCAA Tournament already turned you into “my bracket's BUSTED” Guy, then day two has treated you very well, because everybody's bracket is going up in flames. The second-biggest upset next to Buffalo's beatdown of Arizona came on Friday afternoon, when 13-seed Marshall defeated 4-seed Wichita State 81-75 for the first tournament win in school history. Unfortunately, the exciting, up-tempo affair was marred by the officiating crew's incompetence in the final minute.
After a Thundering Herd bucket that made the score 78-72 with 2:01 to go, Marshall got the ball back and grabbed an offensive rebound, forcing Wichita State to foul with 54 seconds to go. Marshall missed the first free throw, and Shockers guard/12th-year senior/possible 41-year-old Conner Frankamp buried a deep three to cut the lead to 78-75 with 45 seconds to play. Rather than dribble out some clock, Marshall came barreling down the court and appeared to turn the ball over,..
