AP sources: Woods, Els to captain Australia Presidents Cup
Tiger Woods and Ernie Els will duel in the Presidents Cup again, this time as captains.

Woods and Els are expected to be introduced as captains Tuesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

They produced the biggest moment at the Presidents Cup in 2003 in South Africa when they were picked for a sudden-death playoff. They went three holes at Fancourt until it was too dark to continue, and captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player agreed the event would end in a tie.
USGA, R&A announce new set of modern rules for golf
Golf now has a modern set of rules for the Royal & Ancient game, an extensive overhaul that took six years and is aimed at making the rules easier to understand.
The R&A and USGA announced the final version of modernized rules on Monday. They take effect in 2019.
”This was out of recognition that in trying to make the rules more fair, they became too complicated,” said Thomas Pagel, the USGA’s senior director of rules and amateur status. ”With 30-plus years of tinkering, they got complicated, and that wasn’t good for the game.”

Among the changes will be how to take penalty drops – from knee-high length starting next year, instead of from shoulder height. There no longer will be penalties if a golf ball accidentally moves on the green, if a club touches the ground in a hazard or if the ball hits a flagstick that is not being tended on the green.
Also, caddies can no longer line up their players while they are setting up over a shot.

Woods looks closer than ever to winning again
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) The red shirt didn’t have a collar. His head doesn’t have quite as much hair. His lower spine has been fused.
Everything else about Tiger Woods is starting to look familiar.
For the first time since the late summer of 2013, Woods worked the fans into a frenzy on the weekend and keep them on their toes right to the very end. He wound up one shot – one putt – short to Paul Casey in the Valspar Championship. He broke par all four rounds and tied for second, the first time he had done either of those since the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs in August 2013.

All that did was turn attention to this week at Bay Hill, where Woods has won eight times and twice ended long victory droughts.
He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2009 for his first victory after reconstructive knee surgery. He won there again in 2012 for his first victory since the scandal in his personal life, followed by various leg injuries.

Casey ends win drought at Valspar after Woods’ late charge
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) Paul Casey closed with a 6-under 65 and won the Valspar Championship on Sunday after watching Tiger Woods come up one putt short of a playoff.
A highly charged PGA Tour event ended with one player ending a long victory drought, just not the one most fans came to see.
Casey ran off three straight birdies early on the back nine to take the lead, and he closed with tough pars to post at 10-under 274. No one caught him, giving Casey his first PGA Tour victory since the 2009 Houston Open.

Patrick Reed squandered a chance to force a playoff when a long birdie putt rolled 45 feet back to his feet and he three-putted for bogey.
Woods charged up the record crowd with a birdie putt from just inside 45 feet on the 17th hole to get within one shot. He laid well back off the 18th tee and hit his approach from 185 yards to just inside 40 feet. The birdie chance to force a playoff was 2 feet short.

Vijay Singh gets 1st individual win on PGA Tour Champions
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) Vijay Singh got up-and-down for birdie with a putter from off the green on the final hole for a one-shot victory in the Toshiba Classic on Sunday.
The 55-year-old Hall of Famer edged Tommy Tolles, Tom Pernice Jr. and Scott McCarron to win for the first time as an individual on the PGA Tour Champions. He teamed with Carlos Franco to win last year’s Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf.
Singh has played a limited schedule on the 50-and-over tour while continuing to compete on the PGA Tour, where he has 34 career victories.

”I just put a lot of pressure on myself when I first came out here. Every time I teed up, you know, I was – I thought I had to win. The more I did that, the more I didn’t win, the harder it got,” Singh said. ”This week was a little different. Last week I was sick with cold and flu, and this week kind of started out that way, so my expectation wasn’t very high. I just came out here, I said, `I’m just going to go out a..

Casey wins at Innisbrook as Woods come up short by a putt
PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) Right when Paul Casey felt he was a winner in the Valspar Championship, he looked up at the TV and saw a scene that was all too familiar.
Tiger Woods, red shirt blazing on Sunday, holed a 45-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole at Innisbrook that pulled him to within one shot of the Casey’s lead. Moments later, Woods settled over a birdie putt from just inside 40 feet that would have forced a playoff.
”I loved his putt on 17. That was amazing,” Casey said. ”I thought he was going to hole the one on 18.”

Not this time.
Not yet.
A long victory drought on the PGA Tour ended Sunday, just not the one most people – Casey included – were expecting.
Casey rallied from five shots behind. He ran off three straight birdies early on the back nine, closed with a 6-under 65 and won by one shot when Patrick Reed had a 45-foot putt roll back to his feet on the 18th hole, and Woods came up a few feet short of a birdie putt on the final hole.
