Wallace wins Indian Open in playoff vs fellow Brit Johnson

NEW DELHI (AP) Matt Wallace birdied the first playoff hole against fellow Englishman Andrew ”Beef” Johnston to win the Indian Open on Sunday.

Wallace went for the green in two on the playoff hole, the 18th, needing only 20 feet for an eagle. Johnston laid up and had a longer putt for birdie, which he missed, and Wallace won when he tapped in from a foot.

”Since being 3-over through 8 in my first round, I’ve played some off my best golf,” Wallace said.

Johnston shot a final-round 66, Wallace a 68. They finished with 11-under totals of 277 at the DLF Golf and Country Club.

Sihwan Kim of the U.S. finished third after a 68, three strokes behind.

Hometown favorite Shubhankar Sharma faded on the back nine with a 75 to finish seven shots behind.

Sharma and Wallace shared the lead after the third round. But Sharma bogeyed two of three holes on the back nine, including a double-bogey 7 after an out-of-bounds tee shot on the 15th, to end his chances of winning ..

Pernice holds onto lead in iffy weather at Toshiba Classic

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) Tom Pernice Jr. remained patient in cool, rainy and breezy conditions on Saturday and held onto a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Toshiba Classic.

Pernice shot a 1-under 70 with a sloppy bogey on the par-5 18th as the leaderboard began to bunch up at Newport Beach Country Club. Joe Durant, Scott McCarron and Vijay Singh were among the players who challenged Pernice throughout the afternoon, and 13 players were within four shots of the lead heading into the final round.

Pernice’s pitching wedge from 108 yards on 18 caught a gust of wind and spun back into a bunker.

”Just not a very good finish, unfortunately,” Pernice said. ”I played pretty solid most of the day, just didn’t get the ball close to the hole very often.”

The 58-year-old Pernice, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour Champions, was at 8-under 134. Durant, a winner three weeks ago at the Chubb Classic, shot 66 and was one shot back alongside McCarron (68), who mi..

Woods closes to within 1 shot of Canadian rookie Conners

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) Tiger Woods chipped in from behind the ninth green and the roar was unmistakable, the tree-rattling variety that belongs to only one player in golf. Moments later, Woods raised the putter in his left hand as another birdie putt dropped for a share of the lead at the Valspar Championship.

Corey Conners heard the whole round and it made him smile.

Never mind that Conners had six birdies in his round of 3-under 68 for a one-shot lead Saturday as he tries for his first PGA Tour victory. Even the players trying to beat Woods got swept up in the emotions of seeing him closer than ever to having a chance to win again.

”I can confirm he’s back. The roars are back,” said Brandt Snedeker, who was along for the ride with Woods and matched his 67. ”It’s fun to hear the crowd going crazy again and realize how excited we are in having him back out here and play the way he is. He’s playing great.”

Conners, the Canadian rookie in only his 17th st..

Sharma, Wallace share lead at Indian Open

NEW DELHI (AP) Home favorite Shubhankar Sharma shared the lead with Matt Wallace of England at the Indian Open after the third round on Saturday.

He and Wallace, who also had a mixed round with four birdies and four bogeys in a 70, are on 7-under 209 overall. The Englishman eagled the par-4 No. 9.

Stephen Gallacher of Scotland had the best round of the day – a 67 – to rise 22 places to third, one stroke behind.

Emiliano Grillo had a four-stroke overnight lead but the Argentine shot a 78 and is tied for fourth with Matthias Schwab (68) and Andrew Johnston (73).

Sharma held the 54-hole lead in his first World Golf Championship appearance last week, in Mexico. He finished tied for ninth after a closing 74. He was at No. 462 in the world three months ago when he shot 61 in the second round and won t..

PGA Tour Champions: Pernice leads by 3 in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) Tom Pernice Jr. shot a bogey-free 7-under 64 on Friday for a three-shot lead in the Toshiba Classic.

The 58-year-old Pernice, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour Champions, has never played particularly well at Newport Beach Country Club, even though it’s a home game of sorts for the Southern California resident. The event was off the schedule last year while the clubhouse was renovated.

”I think the course is in the best condition it’s been in in quite some time. I thought the condition of the golf course was pretty inferior the last two or three times we played it,” Pernice said. ”They did hire a new superintendent here, and obviously he’s doing a heck of a job because it’s remarkably better than it had been in the past.”

Seven players were three shots back: Scott Parel, Joey Sindelar, Scott Verplank, David Frost, Scott McCarron, Tommy Tolles and Fran Quinn.

You have to see this gymnast’s hands-free, seated backflip to believe it

OK, so this video is apparently old. In fact, University of Michigan gymnast Brandon Burns celebrated the one-year anniversary of it going viral earlier this week. But that doesn't make it any less impressive. And we hadn't seen it to now, so excuse us while we freak out.

What the. . . ? How the. . . ? That's a backflip from a seated position using no hands. And he nails the landing. Incredible.

Legend has it that Bo Jackson used to be able to do a backflip out of a swimming pool, but with all due respect to Jackson, Bo did not know this move.
In fact, Brandon's Instagram is a treasure trove of jaw-dropping displays of physical talent — and abs that would make Mark Wahlberg jealous.

Woods takes share of early lead at Innisbrook

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) Corey Conners knew Tiger Woods had finished his second round at Innisbrook because he couldn’t see him. He was only about 50 yards from the ninth green, but there were too many fans covering every inch of grass, packed in a dozen deep because of Woods.

Woods brought the Valspar Championship to life Friday with his best round of a comeback that is building momentum toward the Masters.

Conners was happy to play a quiet round in the afternoon and wind up with the lead.

The Canadian rookie ran off three birdies before a careless error set him back, and he finished with a 2-under 69 for a two-shot lead going into the weekend. Right on his heels was Woods, who kept a clean card until his final hole and shot 68.

Conners was on the putting green when Woods and his entourage – officials, security, media and stragglers – walked along the edge of the green, in front of another group waiting to tee off on No. 1 and toward the scoring area.

Woods takes share of early lead at Innisbrook

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) Tiger Woods put his name on the leaderboard again, and this time it stayed there.

Woods made four birdies, got a few good bounces and kept a clean card until the last hole Friday for a 3-under 68 that gave him a share of the early lead at the Valspar Championship. Paul Casey and Brandt Snedeker also had 68s and were at 4-under 138.

To be determined was whether Woods remained part of the lead by the end of the second round, where the weather was warmer and the wind more manageable. But it was clear after two rounds at a tournament he had never played that his comeback is gaining momentum.

Woods takes share of early lead at Innisbrook

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) Tiger Woods put his name on the leaderboard again, and this time it stayed there.

Woods looked sharper as the gallery got louder. He made four birdies, got a few good bounces and kept a clean card at Innisbrook until the last hole for a 3-under 68 that gave him a share of the early lead Friday at the Valspar Championship.

Paul Casey and Brandt Snedeker also had 68s, while Ryan Palmer had a 66 to share the lead at 4-under 138.

”I don’t think this will be leading, but at least I’m there with a chance going into the weekend,” Woods said. ”Today was a good day.”

Masters champion Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy were among those playing in the afternoon.

Woods also got his name high on the leaderboard when he first returned from his fourth back surgery in the Bahamas, an unofficial event with an 18-man field before as sparse of a gallery as will ever see him play. That didn’t last long.

This looked as though it could.
