Wie clinches LPGA Singapore event for first win since 2014

SINGAPORE (AP) Michelle Wie holed a 36-foot putt from off the green on the final hole to win the Women’s World Championship by one stroke on Sunday and capture her first LPGA tournament since the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open.

With four players in contention to win on the last hole, Wie managed to separate herself from the pack when she drained her lengthy birdie putt on the 72nd hole at the Sentosa Golf Club for a final round of 7-under 65 to finish at 17-under 271.

The 28-year-old Wie, who led the tournament after three rounds a year ago before fading on the last day, leaped into the air and clenched her fist in celebration as the ball disappeared into the bottom of the cup.

But she still faced an anxious wait before being declared the winner.

”I wanted really badly to win, especially after what happened last year, I had some unfinished business here,” Wie said. I knew if I shot almost 7, 8-under, I’d have a chance.

Stricker hits in water, gives up Cologuard Classic lead

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Steve Stricker lost the Cologuard Classic lead Saturday when he drove into the water on the par-5 18th in a closing double bogey.

A year after losing a chance to win the event in his PGA Tour Champions debut when his 3-wood went left into the water on the final hole, Stricker did it again Saturday.

”Pulled it poorly, pulled it 20 yards left of where I hit it in the water last year,” Stricker said. ”It was close again, but just too far left. It just doesn’t set up very well for me, that hole. Struggling to try to get it in the fairway.”

Stricker ended up with a 3-under 70, leaving him a stroke behind Tommy Tolles with a round left on Omni Tucson National’s Catalina Course. Tolles bogeyed the 18th for a 70 after following Stricker into the water.

”I had my moments again today, good and bad, and for the most part it was more good than bad,” Tolles said. ”I did not putt near as well.”

Sharma holds his nerve and the lead in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) Shubhankar Sharma held his nerve to the end and held a two-shot lead going into the final round of the Mexico Championship.

Now the 21-year-old from India has to hold off a few of golf’s biggest names.

Sharma holed a 15-foot par putt on the final hole at Chapultepec Golf Club for a 2-under 69, leaving him 18 holes away from capping off his amazing rise. Three months ago, he had yet to win a tournament and was ranked No. 462 in the world. A victory would likely put him in the top 25.

Two shots behind were Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, along with Rafa Cabrera Bello and Tyrrell Hatton. Another shot back was Dustin Johnson, the No. 1 player in the world and defending champion.

George Coetzee leads by 2 after 3 rounds in Pretoria

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) George Coetzee opened a 2-shot lead heading into the final round of the Tshwane Open after a 3-under 68 Saturday.

The overnight leader fired five birdies and two bogeys in his home city – and on the course where he’s a member – to move to 14 under overall.

Mikko Korhonen and Sam Horsfield are tied for second.

Korhonen kept up the pressure with a 69 at Pretoria Country Club to go 12 under. Horsfield shot up the leaderboard with a 7-under 64 that started with four straight birdies.

Coetzee is looking for a fourth European Tour title and a second at the Tshwane Open after winning this event in 2015. All of his previous wins have come on African soil.

Nelly Korda shoots 65 for 1-stroke lead at LPGA Singapore

SINGAPORE (AP) Florida teenager Nelly Korda shot a third-round 7-under 65 Saturday to take a one-stroke lead at the LPGA Tour’s Women’s World Championship after Danielle Kang made her first bogeys of the tournament to slip back into second place.

Korda had eight birdies and one bogey as she finished on 15-under 201 heading into the final round at the Sentosa Golf Club.

Kang started the day leading by four strokes and finished trailing Korda by one after a 70. She dropped her first shot of the tournament on the 15th after going 50 holes without making a bogey, then made another mistake on 18.

”It actually doesn’t bother me. I wasn’t really thinking about whether I was going to be in the lead tomorrow or chasing, but Nelly had a really solid game today,” Kang said. ”I didn’t want to finish on a bogey … but I gave myself a really good par chance.”
