Shubhankar Sharma wins weather-delayed Joburg Open

JOHANNESBURG (AP) Shubhankar Sharma won his first European Tour title by a shooting 3-under 69 Monday in the final round of the weather-delayed Joburg Open.

The 21-year-old Indian resumed his round on the eighth green after play was halted early Sunday afternoon because of storms. He parred that hole, birdied No. 9 and made par on every hole on the back nine.

Sharma finished at 23-under 264, three strokes ahead of the pack, and qualified for next year’s British Open, too.

”I actually wasn’t going to come here about a week ago … so I’m really happy that I came,” said Sharma, who shot 61 in the second round. ”I don’t think I’m ever going forget my first time in South Africa.”

Erik van Rooyen (66) was second, three strokes ahead of Shaun Norris (65) and Tapio Pulkkanen (68).

Angel Yin wins Omega Dubai Ladies Classic

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) American Angel Yin won the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic in a playoff Sunday, beating South Korea’s In-Kyung Kim with a birdie on the second extra hole.

The 19-year-old Yin won with a tap-in birdie on the drivable 17th hole. The victory in the Ladies European Tour season finale is her first on a major tour.

”I feel amazing,” Yin said.

Yin closed with a 5-under 67, saving par on the par-5 18th after finding the water, to match Kim (65) and France’s Celine Herbin (64) at 15-under 273 at Emirates Golf Club.

Yin and Kim birdied the 18th on the first extra hole, and Herbin was eliminated after hitting into the water with her third shot.

India’s Shubhankar Sharma leads suspended Joburg Open

JOHANNESBURG (AP) India’s Shubhankar Sharma had a four-stroke lead in the Joburg Open with 11 holes left Sunday when lightning and heavy rain forced the suspension of play.

Making his 10th European Tour start, Sharma was 22 under at Randpark. He had a 61 on Friday on the Bushwillow Course and shot a 66 on Saturday on the Firethorn Course to take a five-stroke lead into the final round. On Sunday, Sharma birdied two of the first seven holes at Fitethorn before play was stopped for the day.

”I had to cancel my flight tickets today but that was an easy thing to do considering the position I’m in,” Sharma said.

South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen was second. Play was suspended with Sharma on the eighth green, and Van Rooyen looking at a tap-in birdie on the ninth after birdieing four of the first eight.

Forty-two players were unable to complete the round.

Steve Stricker, Sean O’Hair team to win QBE Shootout

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) Steve Stricker provided the pep talk and Sean O’Hair delivered the shot to secure victory Sunday in the QBE Shootout.

Stricker and O’Hair closed with an 8-under 64 for a two-shot victory over Graeme McDowell and Shane Lowry, effectively clinching it when O’Hair made an eagle on the par-5 17th hole at Tiburon Golf Club.

In the final round of better ball, Stricker and O’Hair rallied from a two-shot deficit on the front nine, built a two-shot lead through 14 holes and were ahead by one shot heading to the reachable 17th with the green guarded by a huge bunker with a vetted, waist-high wall.

”Walking to 17 tee, Steve said, `A 3 would go a long way right now,”’ O’Hair said.

O’Hair hit 7-iron from 195 yards over the bunker and it bounced onto the green about 12 feet away. McDowell and Lowry both hit into the bunker, with Lowry’s ball against the face of the wall that forced him to play sideways into the bunker. Both players had to settle..

McDowell and Lowry tie Stricker and O’Hair for Shootout lead

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) Graeme McDowell and Shane Lowry shot an 8-under 64 in modified alternate shot and shared the lead Saturday with Steve Stricker and Sean O’Hair going into the final round of the QBE Shootout.

McDowell (Northern Ireland) and Lowry (Ireland), the only international players among the 12 teams at Tiburon Golf Club, began to erase a five-shot deficit with an eagle and birdie on the opening two holes and they dropped only one shot all day in blustery conditions.

Stricker and O’Hair started the back nine with a pair of bogeys, rallied with three straight birdies and then dropped one last shot from the bunker on the 17th.

The teams were tied at 18-under 126.

Lexi Thompson, the lone LPGA Tour player in the field, teamed with Tony Finau for a 66 that put them in the hunt going into the final round. Thompson and Finau were three shots behind.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) India’s Shubhankar Sharma shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to open a five-stroke lead in the Joburg Open.

Making his 10th career European Tour start, Sharma was at 20-under 195 at Randpark. He had a 61 on Friday on the Bushwillow Course and added a bogey-free round Saturday on the Firethorn Course – also the site of the final round.

”I’m really happy,” Sharma said. ”I wanted to play even though I shot a 10 under yesterday and it is always difficult to follow up on a low round. I’m really proud of the way I played today.

”I’m very pleased that I came to the Joburg Open. I had my visa but it has been a very long season so I was contemplating if I wanted to come here. I’m really happy that I did.”

Sweden’s Christofer Blomstrand was second after a 62. England’s James Morrison (67) and South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen (70) were another stroke back at 14 under.
