Female student golf player denied trophy in boys’ tournament

UXBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) A female high school student who had the best score at a boys’ golf tournament in Massachusetts has been denied the trophy because she’s a girl.

Lunenburg High School student Emily Nash’s score of 75 at the Central Massachusetts Division 3 boys’ golf tournament was better than the runner-up. But Nash wasn’t awarded first place and won’t advance to next week’s state tournament because of a rule set by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.

The rule states that girls playing on a fall boys’ team can’t be entered in the Boys Fall Individual Tournament.

Article continues below …

That means the 16-year-old Nash can’t compete as an individual, and her score on Tuesday only counted to her team’s total.

The tournament director tells The Telegram & Gazette he made Nash aware of the rule before the tournament began.

This story has been corrected to show that Emily Nash had the best score, not the highest score.

Gribble vies to repeat at Sanderson Farms Championship (Oct 25, 2017)

Yes, it’s a given that this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA Tour is playing understudy to a glitzy World Golf Championship event halfway around the planet in China.

But that doesn’t subtract from the importance of the tournament here in Jackson, Miss., and what winning can do to the career of a professional golfer.

Ask defending champion Cody Gribble, who’s back in the hunt of a repeat title as he and 131 other of the best players in the world compete over 72 holes — beginning Thursday at the Country Club of Jackson.

Article continues below …

“It was a great way to start off the year, and a dream come true to win on the PGA Tour,” Gribble said. “Getting a win was the best thing in the world for a tour card, knowing you have your card secured for a couple years. I’m happy to be back here — I’m looking forward to trying to pick it back up again this week.”

Six former Sanderson Farms Championship winners are in this year’s field, including Gribble, Peter Malnati ..

Young players savor opportunity at Sanderson Farms

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) The Sanderson Farms Championship has earned a reputation as a golden opportunity for the PGA Tour’s young players.

Tyler Duncan is among a large group of rookies who hope to contend this week at the Country Club of Jackson. The 28-year-old Duncan was in contention at the Safeway Open in Napa, California, earlier this month before shooting a 3-over 75 in the final round to finish fifth.

Now he gets a chance at Sanderson Farms, which has produced three straight first-time winners.

Article continues below …

”There is hope there to go out, and if any of us plays well, we’re going to have a chance to win,” Duncan said.

The biggest reason Sanderson Farms represents such an opportunity for players like Duncan is because many of the world’s best are overseas at the World Golf Championships in Shanghai. With no Dustin Johnsons or Jordan Spieths on the course, it makes for a much more winnable weekend.

The tournament’s recent first-time winners include Nick Taylo..

8 reasons you should probably not let Amazon Key into your house

Yellow Dog ProductionsAmazon, the tech giant that isn’t placing its second headquarters in your hometown so please stop asking, has introduced a revolutionary new service called Amazon Key that will allow its couriers to . . . wait, does this say “open your front door and put your package inside your house?” This is real? They want to get into our homes? Ugh, the future keeps getting worse and worse. A DEFINITELY PARTIAL list of reasons why Letting People Who Work for Amazon Have Access to Your Home is Possibly a Bad Idea:
1. (Heavy defeated sigh, followed by repeated banging of head against desk)
2. To let its couriers into your home, Amazon Key relies on Amazon’s new Cloud Cam and a compatible smart lock. When the courier arrives, he scans a barcode, which is sent to the cloud to request entrance. If everything is legit, the cloud then instructs the camera to begin recording while the courier swipes an app to unlock your door. The courier then enters your house, drops the package by ..

Aspiring tour pro pulls off one of the craziest hole-in-one feats we’ve ever heard about

The scorecards and golf balls from Matt Moroz's three aces in eight days. The recent October edition of Golf Digest was called “The Miracles Issue” and featured a number of mind-blowing accomplishments on the course. But nobody written about on those pages did what Matt Moroz recently pulled off. In fact, we’d surprised if anyone ever has.
Moroz made three holes-in-one over an eight-day span in September, and before you say, “that’s not that amazing,” consider this: Two of them came on par 4s. That are longer than 320 yards.
“It’s been a crazy stretch,” Moroz said when reached by phone.
Um, yeah, you could say that. Although, aces seem less miraculous when you make them at the rate Moroz does. The recent trio gives the 30-year-old lefty 17 already, including three on par 4s. He also has two other albatrosses on par 5s.
“I’m very proud, I know it’s hard to do,” Moroz said. “I have friends who are good players, who don’t have any. I know luck has to be involved, I just tell people yo..

Adrian Gonzalez, who has never been to a World Series, skips World Series for a family vacation

Sean M. HaffeyAdrian Gonzalez has played more games without a World Series appearance than only two other active players in the MLB, a streak that, despite the Dodgers’ first World Series berth since 1988, looks set to continue. The Dodgers shut down Gonzalez on September 26th after he aggravated a chronic back injury, but instead of hanging out, drinking in the atmosphere/a few Tecates, and reveling in the adoration of the Dodgers faithful, Gonzalez decided to pack up his family and head to Europe instead.
If this sounds crazy to you, join the clubhouse. Gonzalez has spent 13 World Series-less years in the MLB and when finally got his chance to at least partly experience the Fall Classic, he took the proverbial pass to first.
Despite the collective raised eyebrow around baseball, however, his teammates have been supportive. ““He’s going to support us. He doesn’t want to be a distraction. That’s awesome,” said Kenley Jansen. “We know that he’s a big part of this and want him to know th..

The New Jersey Devils finally get around to embracing their real mascot with these amazing t-shirts

What little the casual sports fan might know about New Jersey Devils is that they had a pretty good goalie a few years back, won a few Stanley Cups, and in typical Jersey fashion, celebrated with a parade through a parking lot.
Anything else has likely been gleaned from one memorable episode of “Seinfeld,” in which Elaine is alerted to the peculiar fandom of her boyfriend David Puddy, who paints his face and accosts unsuspecting clergy members in the street.
In fact, so convincing was actor Patrick Warburton's depiction of a die-hard Devils loyalist that it remains a core part of the team's identity today. Which leads us to this picture of current Devils Brian Boyle, Stefan Noesen, Keith Kinkaid, Pavel Zacha, and Adam Henrique wearing t-shirts of Puddy designed by California-based Violent Gentlemen.
