Typhoon, visa flap send Kuchar’s fall schedule into rough

SHANGHAI (AP) The fall schedule didn’t work out the way Matt Kuchar imagined.

Kuchar signed up for three straight tournaments overseas, starting with a working vacation with his family in Japan for the Bridgestone Open, followed by the HSBC Champions and then the Turkish Airlines Open.

He made it through two rounds of the Bridgestone Open before he evacuated ahead of Typhoon Lan. And he withdrew from the Turkish Airlines Open when relations between the U.S. and Turkey reached a point that both countries suspended nonimmigrant visa services for travel between the two countries.

”It looked like things were getting to a point where it was better not to go,” Kuchar said. ”I did some homework with a U.S. senator friend of mine who checked with the State Department. When the U.S. stops issuing visas, there’s an issue.”

Kuchar played in Turkey five years ago as part of an exhibition that included Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. His strongest memory was figur..

Column: Golf’s big-money Asian swing is worth the travel

SHANGHAI (AP) Shadows are rare in Shanghai, so a clear blue sky and abundant sunshine only added to a happy mood Tuesday at the HSBC Champions.

Not that Lucas Glover needed any kind of emotional lift.

Or Pat Perez, for that matter.

They are among 17 players who have shown up for all three weeks of the Asian swing on the PGA Tour. Perez is among six players from that list who was at East Lake for the Tour Championship, which ended two weeks before the CIMB Classic kicked off this stretch in Malaysia. Jhonattan Vegas had it tougher. He made it to the Tour Championship and then played the Presidents Cup, giving him one week off before three events halfway around the world.

Too much golf?

That’s one way of looking at it. Perez and Glover chose a different point of view.

These three tournaments were short fields (78 players) with no cut that offered a combined $26 million in prize money. They were guaranteed a paycheck and FedEx Cup points, the curre..

Women finally get their day at Pebble Beach for US Open

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) The women are finally getting their day at Pebble Beach.

The USGA said Tuesday the U.S. Women’s Open will be held at Pebble Beach in 2023, making good on a decade-old pledge to hold the biggest event in women’s golf on one of the most famous courses in America.

The USGA also said Pebble Beach will host the U.S. Open for the seventh time in 2027, giving California four U.S. Opens in a nine-year stretch starting in 2019.

Pebble has hosted the U.S. Women’s Amateur twice, but never the Women’s Open.

Former USGA president Walter Driver said in 2004 that Pebble Beach had expressed interest in hosting the Women’s Open. Three years later, former USGA executive director David Fay all but guaranteed the Women’s Open going to Pebble Beach. ”We know the year – it’s 2014 – but we have not finalized the date,” Fay said in 2007.

Instead, the U.S. Open and Women’s Open were staged in consecutive weeks at Pinehurst No. 2 that year.

Tiger Woods set to enter plea bargain for DUI arrest

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) The diversion program for intoxicated drivers that Tiger Woods is expected to enter Wednesday is one of several across the U.S. aimed at reducing the number of repeat offenders and backlogs of court cases.

The 41-year-old Woods is scheduled to plead guilty at a court hearing to reckless driving, a less severe charge than driving under the influence, as part of a Palm Beach County, Florida, program that has graduated almost 2,500 first-time offenders since it began four years ago.

Deputy State Attorney Richard Clausi, who oversees the county’s misdemeanor prosecutions, said that less than 1 percent of the program’s participants have reoffended. He said the key has been getting offenders to take responsibility for their actions without requiring a trial and making sure they complete the program.

Ohio State unveil heavy metal alternates for Saturday’s Penn State showdown

Following in the footsteps of Florida, which unveiled a set of full-gator get-ups for its matchup with Texas A&M a few weeks back, THE Ohio State University is set to pluck its own ridiculous alternate off the rack for this weekend’s Big Ten brouhaha with Penn State. Taking their traditional pewter accents and turning them up to eleven, the Buckeyes have stitched together a menacing monotone look that might just give them the edge they need to topple the second-ranked team in the nation come Saturday afternoon. Check them out below:
FacebookPinterestFacebookPinterestFacebookPinterestReportedly a riff on the team’s “Land of Wolves” motto, the gray Nike uniforms are complemented by bold Lebron-designed cleats, a Sith-approved helmet sticker update, and subtle wolf-camo patterning, presumably all the better for hunting Saquon Barkley with, my dear.
Rumor has it Penn State attempted to block Ohio State from donning the gray alternates on account of them being too similar to its navy scheme..
