Host Garcia wins Andalucia Valderrama Masters

SOTOGRANDE, Spain (AP) Tournament host Sergio Garcia won the Andalucia Valderrama Masters after shooting 4-under 67 Sunday in the final round.

It was the Spaniard’s sixth win on home soil and his second title at Real Club Valderrama. He won the Andalucia Masters at this venue in 2011.

Garcia made five birdies to go with one bogey, as he finished on 12-under 272 – one stroke ahead of Joost Luiten of the Netherlands.

”Joost played unbelievable. I played really well and I felt like maybe I could get away and he just kept coming back and back and made it an amazing match,” Garcia said. ”I stayed patient the whole time, I made sure the bad moments did not affect me too much and made a couple of really key putts coming in.”

The 37-year-old Garcia won the Dubai Desert Classic in February before he clinched his first major at the Masters in April.

He dedicated his 14th European Tour win to his wife, Angela Akins, and the baby they are expecting in March.

Thomas birdies 2nd hole of playoff to win CJ Cup

JEJU, South Korea (AP) Justin Thomas beat Australia’s Marc Leishman on the second playoff hole Sunday to win the inaugural CJ Cup in South Korea and cap his breakout year on the PGA Tour.

Thomas sealed his fifth PGA title in 2017 – and his first of the new 2017-18 PGA season – when he birdied the second extra hole and Leishman made bogey after finding the water.

The pair went to a sudden-death playoff after completing the first U.S. PGA Tour regular-season event in South Korea tied at 9-under 279.

Thomas, who shared the overnight lead with Scott Brown, fell behind when he had a double bogey on the 550-yard par-5 No. 3 hole.

”I just kept telling myself it was a bad golf swing,” Thomas said. ”It wasn’t a mental error or wasn’t a wrong judgment that we made but just a bad golf swing at a pretty bad time but I knew you are going make bogeys out here today.”

Thomas regained the lead and looked set for the win in regulation until he bogeyed No. 17, a 19..

South Korean Ji fires 65 to win Taiwan Championship

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) Eun-Hee Ji fired a 7-under-par 65 to win the Taiwan Championship on Sunday for her first LPGA title since the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open.

Ji, who had a six-stroke lead heading into the final round, carded seven birdies to finish at 17-under 271, six strokes ahead of Lydia Ko, who also closed with a 65.

”I’m so happy and excited because I haven’t won for the past eight years,” said Ji. ”So I was waiting for this moment for so long, so I’m super happy right now.”

Ji’s six-stroke margin of victory ties the largest of the 2017 season, joining the previous mark set by Mirim Lee at the Kia Classic.

Ko birdied her last two holes.

”I’ll still take a birdie on the finishing hole,” said Ko. ”When I was on 17 tee I said I want to finish with two birdies, and I was able to do that. I played really solid today.”

Top-ranked So Yeon Ryu also shot a bogey-free 65 to move into a tie for third place with Lizette Salas and Carlota Ciganda.

Langer shoots 63 to take 3-shot lead in playoff opener

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Bernhard Langer matched the course record with a 9-under 63 on Saturday to take a three-stroke lead in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the first event in the PGA Tour Champions’ Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.

Seeking an unprecedented fifth Schwab Cup and fourth in a row, the 60-year-old Langer leads the season standings and has a tour-high five victories this season.

”I’m playing nicely,” Langer said. ”It’s a lot of fun. Hitting a lot of fairways, a lot of greens, giving myself opportunities and today was pretty special.”

Garcia leads Andalucia Masters heading into final round

SOTOGRANDE, Spain (AP) Tournament host Sergio Garcia will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Andalucia Valderrama Masters after shooting a 3-under 68 on Saturday.

The Spaniard had six birdies and three bogeys to reach 8 under for the tournament, just ahead of English golfer Daniel Brooks, who shot a 7-under 64 for the best round of the week.

Garcia is trying to win his second title at Real Club Valderrama. He won the Andalucia Masters at this venue in 2011.

”There’s still a long way (to go),” Garcia said. ”We can’t get too much ahead of ourselves.”

On Friday, he was awarded an honorary lifetime membership by the European Tour in recognition of his U.S. Masters win in April.

Joost Luiten of the Netherlands, who led after the second round, shot an even-par 71 and was two shots behind Garcia.

Ji fires 69 for 6-stroke lead at Taiwan Championship

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) Eun-Hee Ji carded a 3-under 69 to open up a six-stroke lead after the third round of the Taiwan Championship on Saturday.

Ji, who shared the overnight lead with Jenny Shin, recovered from a bogey on the par-4 5th with four birdies for a total of 10-under 206. The South Korean veteran is looking for her first win since the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open.

Lydia Ko carded seven birdies against a bogey and a double bogey on the 17th for the day’s lowest round of 68 and is tied for second with Shin at 4-under 212.

”It was pretty tough out there with the wind being pretty strong and starting from the first hole,” Ko said. ”It kind of progressively picked up. I played solid and made a few good putts. A little careless plus little mistakes on 17, but it’s always nice to be able to finish with a birdie on the last.”

Shin had three bogeys on her way to a 75 but the LPGA Tour veteran wasn’t ruling out a surprise on Sunday.

Thomas fires 70 to share lead after 3rd round of CJ Cup

JEJU, South Korea (AP) Justin Thomas fired a 2-under 70 in windy conditions to share the lead with fellow American Scott Brown after the third round of the CJ Cup on Saturday.

Thomas offset a lone double bogey and a bogey with five birdies to reach the clubhouse at 9-under 207.

”I know for a fact I played better today that I did on Thursday when I shot a 9 under,” Thomas said. ”It’s just so hard out there. I’ve never played in a place where the wind swirls as much as it does here.”

Brown had back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11 but recovered with two birdies on the back nine, adding to the one he had on the par-4 No. 5 for a 71.

Anirban Lahiri of India moved into a share of third place with Australian Marc Leishman (71) after a 69 that included four birdies and a bogey.
