Americans win Presidents Cup for 7th straight time

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) The Americans won the Presidents Cup for the seventh straight time, and this one was no contest.

With most of the work already done, a dominant U.S. team needed only one point from the 12 singles matches Sunday. Kevin Chappell halved the opening match with Marc Leishman, and victory was assured when Daniel Berger went 3 up with three to play against Si Woo Kim.

Berger wound up winning his match, and the celebration was on.

President Donald Trump arrived at Liberty National about 45 minutes before the Americans secured the gold trophy that he was to present to them. Trump, the honorary chairman of the matches, is the first sitting president to attend on the final day and present the trophy.

”This is a juggernaut of a U.S. team,” said Nick Price, in his third and final stint of the International captain, all of them losses. ”They’re an overpowering team that played some phenomenal golf. It was tough to watch, especially being on the receiving end.”

Trump arrives at Liberty National for Presidents Cup finale

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) President Donald Trump arrived at Liberty National on Sunday just as the Americans were closing in on victory in the Presidents Cup.

Trump was watching from the hospitality suite of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. The tour said he would become the first sitting president to present the trophy at this event, which was named after the highest office.

Trump had a clear view of the 14th green, and he appeared behind a glass wall from an upstairs library in the clubhouse with Monahan and former tour commissioner Tim Finchem, who worked in the White House during the Carter administration.

He became the first president to attend the matches since Bill Clinton watched on Saturday in 2000 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.

There has never been a more presidential week than this Presidents Cup, which started Thursday with the previous three U.S. presidents – Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama – sitting together at the opening ceremony and wat..

Presidents Cup 2017: What should we call this “Romp By The Swamp”? A collection of our favorite nicknames

(Photo by Keyur Khamar/PGA TOUR)JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Golf fans fondly remember the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah because of its exciting, intense finish. But it doesn't hurt that it also has a great nickname: “The War By The Shore.” In contrast, the 2017 Presidents Cup has been anything but a war by the (Jersey) shore. But that doesn't mean we can't come up with a memorable moniker for this landslide by Lady Liberty (Hey, that's not bad. . . ). Here are some suggestions, both from us and others.
Let's start with “The Romp By The Swamp.” We like it because it's a tribute both to the surrounding New Jersey Meadowlands as well as a nod to “The War By The Shore” — ju..

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) Brooke Henderson took a big step towards her sixth LPGA Tour title in only six holes on Sunday, but will have to resume on Monday after rain, lightning and dangerous winds disrupted the final round of the New Zealand Women’s Open.

The 20-year-old Canadian leads the tournament by four shots at 17-under par from overnight leader Belen Mozo of Spain and American Brittany Lincicome.

Tour officials ruled the tournament would remain 72 holes and players will return to the Windross Farm course Monday to complete their final rounds.

Henderson was 3-under Sunday after her six holes. She birdied the second, fourth and fifth holes to move past the faltering Mozo, who was 2-over after six holes when a trying day finally ended.
