Americans keeping rolling, 1 point away from Presidents Cup

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) The International team lost just about everything but its sense of humor.

A long and demoralizing day at the Presidents Cup ended with Anirban Lahiri making two clutch birdies in a fourballs match that spared his team the indignity of watching the Americans celebrate another victory – on Saturday, no less.

From the sun rising over the Manhattan skyline until the chill of twilight at Liberty National, the Americans poured it on with such frightening force that they were one match away from clinching the cup one day early. The International team went 13 straight matches without winning until Lahiri and Kim won on the 18th hole.

”They got a standing ovation when they walked in our team room tonight,” International captain Nick Price said with a smile. ”First time we had seen a match go our way for a long time.”

And that means it will be a short Sunday.

The Americans had a 14 1/2-3 1/2 lead and need only one point from the 12 singles matches on Sunday.

Tiger Woods gets the College Gameday sign treatment

All things considered, it's been a pretty positive week for Tiger Woods. He's fully embraced his assistant captain role at the Presidents Cup, and claims he's progressing nicely when it comes to his recovery.
That's all nice, but when it comes to signs at ESPN's College GameDay, no one is safe, not Tiger, and not even Tim Tebow. This week, the show rolled into Blacksburg, Virginia for the first time in 10 years. The Virginia Tech Hokies, ranked No. 12 in the country, host the No. 2 Clemson Tigers tonight in primetime. Instead of poking fun at a Clemson player, this V-Tech fan went after a different Tiger:

Unfair! Not sure what Tiger ever did to this guy, but it was enough for a random shot from the clouds at the 14-time major champ.

Local favorite Lydia Ko shot 70 and was seven strokes behind Mozo.

Mozo had a bogey at the 164-meter, par-3 13th, where she had a hole in one on Friday.

The hole exemplified how difficult the layout became on Saturday when the wind began to blow and temperatures fell.

It had been one of the easiest holes on the course over the first two days but became one of the hardest on Saturday. Moz..

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. (AP) Sam Saunders followed his opening 12-under 59 with a 66 on Friday to take a two-stroke lead into the weekend in the Web.com Tour Championship.

Arnold Palmer’s grandson, Saunders closed with a double bogey on his home Atlantic Beach Country Club course a day after shooting the seventh sub-60 round in Web.com Tour history.

”It’s the fact that you start feeling disappointed with pars,” Saunders said. ”You make good pars on holes that you know are pars, and you have to tell yourself you’re fine. It feels like you’re playing so bad compared to yesterday. I parred the first three holes today and I felt like, `OK, I’m still playing good golf. It’s not time to panic.”’

Saunders is trying to regain his PGA Tour card in the four-event Web .com Tour Finals after finishing 129th in the FedEx Cup standings. He entered the week 24th in the race for 25 PGA Tour cards with $27,900 – the winner Sunday will get $180,000 – in the first three events.

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) A capsule look at Friday’s fourballs matches at the Presidents Cup:

Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Hadwin, International, halved with Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, United States.

Spieth and Reed were 2 down with four holes to play and disappointed with a halve. Hadwin and Matsuyama lost a 2-up lead with four holes to play and were happy to at least have something out of the match. Matsuyama ran off three birdies on the front nine for a 2-up lead at the turn, and Hadwin’s birdie at the 13th restored the lead to 2 up. The Americans rallied quickly. Reed holed a 15-foot birdie on the 15th, and Spieth hit his tee shot on the par-3 16th to 6 feet for birdie to square the match. The Americans had birdie putts to win the 17th and 18th. Spieth missed from 8 feet, and his 20-foot putt on the 18th hit the left edge and spun out.

Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas, United States, def. Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace, International, 3 and 2.
