U.S. team looks to continue dominance in Presidents Cup (Sep 27, 2017)

There is no doubt that the United States has history on its side as it prepares to defend its streak of six consecutive wins at the 12th Presidents Cup this week at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, N.J.

However, it will take more than the swagger from past successes for the Americans to beat the International team when play begins Thursday.

The International side had arguably its best collection of players since it forged a tie with the U.S. squad in 2003 in South Africa after just missing a victory in 2015, when it lost 15 1/2-14 1/2 in Inchon, South Korea.

Of the 11 matches played since this competition began in 1994, the U.S. team has won nine times, the International team has won once, and one match was a tie, ending famously in the dusk at Fancourt in South Africa as Tiger Woods and Ernie Els of South Africa could not finish after three halved playoff holes.

For the Presidents Cup, the International team is made up of players not from Europe, and in this case, th..

Mickelson leads US for 23rd straight time in team event

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) Phil Mickelson is the voice of experience in team competition, and there’s no comparison.

He was on the putting green Wednesday morning at the Presidents Cup, explaining to some of the six rookies on the American team why the teams might change for the final day of practice, the schedule after the team photo, just about anything short of how to tie their shoes.

Mickelson has played in the Presidents Cup every year since it began in 1994. He has played in every Ryder Cup since 1995. Add them up and this will be his 23rd consecutive time playing in a team event.

For someone like PGA champion Justin Thomas, playing in his first one, that can be hard to fathom.

”I can’t, especially because I was 1 when he playing in his first one, which is really crazy to think,” Thomas said. ”I would love to see what kind of person he was then. I’m sure he was still the same kind of guy. But it’s crazy. To be that good for that long and to have the reputation that he does, b..

Presidents Cup 2017: Jordan Spieth almost tripping into a port-a-potty is the early highlight of Brooks Koepka’s week

His pursuit will be greatly aided if Jordan Spieth the klutz doesn't break something else first.
On Wednesday ahead of this week's Presidents Cup, the 24-year-old Spieth was asked about his injury history — or rather, his lack of an injury history. So far.

“I almost trip every day,” Spieth answered. “But I haven't had any injuries that kept me from playing golf fortunately.”
Wait, wait, wait. Almost trip every day?! That's not the kind of thing you expect to hear from a world-class athlete!
Anyway, Spieth's embarrassing claim was backed up moments..

Woods back on the course in a cart, uncertain about future

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) Tiger Woods made it back from his fourth surgery in time for the Presidents Cup.

Just not to play.

Not even Woods knows when or even if he can return. He even acknowledged Wednesday a scenario that he doesn’t return to competition because he’s at a stage where he’s only hitting 60-yard shots.

This was all about driving a cart as an assistant captain at Liberty National.

Woods is back on a golf course for the first time since the Dubai Desert Classic, where he shot 77 in the first round and withdrew the next day citing back spasms. He had fusion surgery on his back in April, and he had reason to wonder if he would be able to join the U.S. team in this capacity.

He said in his blog May 24 that surgery brought instant nerve relief. Five days later, however, he was arrested on a DUI charge when Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of a running car that was parked awkwardly on the side of the road with a blinker flashing.

Woods said he had an u..

Presidents Cup bracing for Trump show at Liberty National

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) The Presidents Cup is living up to its name like never before. The three previous U.S. presidents will be on the first tee at Liberty National for the start of the matches Thursday, and the PGA Tour is bracing for a Sunday visit by President Donald Trump.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said Trump’s people have been out to the course to take a ”good, hard look at the property” and are working closely with the tournament’s security side.

It would be the first time a sitting president has attended the event since Bill Clinton was at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia in 2000.

”We hope he comes and he’ll be welcomed by us and by our players,” Monahan said.

The Presidents Cup, matches between Americans and players from every other continent except Europe, began in 1994 and since 1998 has invited sitting heads of state from the host country as honorary chairman. Trump accepted his invitation, his first active role with the PGA Tour since a World Go..
