Column: Time for tour to add more sizzle to FedEx Cup finale
ATLANTA (AP) Dustin Johnson had a chance to win $10 million while sitting in front of a television.
For all the drama the final day of the FedEx Cup can provide, it must have been just as entertaining inside the clubhouse at East Lake last year. Johnson was the No. 1 seed and had squandered his chances to win the Tour Championship with a 73 in the final round.
He still could capture the FedEx Cup provided Rory McIlroy didn’t win. Just his luck, McIlroy holed a shot from the 16th fairway for eagle and got into a playoff when Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore both missed birdie putts on the last hole.
And all Johnson could do was watch.
”No offense to Rory, but I was rooting for Chappy very hard,” Johnson said. ”If he would have won, I would have won the FedEx Cup.”
Chappell was eliminated on the first extra hole, and McIlroy wound up beating Moore on the third playoff hole.
Imagine being in the clubhouse with Johnson.
”Extremely uncomfortable,” said Justin Thomas, who happened..
Tiger Woods’ event out of Congressional, looking for sponsor
ATLANTA (AP) The tournament that Tiger Woods launched 10 years ago remained on next season’s PGA Tour schedule.
Still to be determined is where – and if – it is held.
Quicken Loans has not renewed as title sponsor, and the PGA Tour felt it had no choice but to opt out of its contract to play at Congressional in 2018 and 2020. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the tournament, or even golf in the Washington, D.C., area.
For now, The National is scheduled to be played from June 28 through July 1 at a course to be determined.
”We are in discussions with Quicken on extending our partnership, but as we sit here today, we have not concluded those discussions,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said Tuesday.
The tournament began in 2007 as the AT&T National to benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation, with golf’s biggest name as the host. It had a military theme and was held around the Fourth of July outside the nation’s capital.

Another year, another distraction with LPGA’s 5th major
ATLANTA (AP) In the five years since the LPGA Tour decided that the Evian Championship would be a major, the debate over its status has received as much attention as the winners.
The latest edition raised even more questions.
The first round was washed out by rain and raging wind, meaning Sung Hyun Park effectively got a really big mulligan. She was 6 over when the round was scrapped and started over with a 63 the next day. That’s not worthy of an asterisk. It has happened before and it was the most equitable decision.
More disturbing was a ”major” contested over 54 holes, a decision the LPGA reached with alarming swiftness. The LPGA Tour is off this week before going to New Zealand, so it’s not as though another tournament had to be considered.
Heather Daly-Donofrio, the LPGA’s communications and operations officer, said rain was in the forecast through Tuesday. Workers had to use squeegees on the 18th green during the playoff on Sunday.
”Monday was never taken off the table..
Floyd Mayweather’s new Beverly Hills mansion is just as ridiculous as you’d expect
One hundred and eighty million dollars. That’s how much Floyd Mayweather pocketed for taking down Conor McGregor in last month’s much ballyhooed bout. After (presumably) paying the IRS the $22 million he owed them, how did The Man They Call Money splurge? On a $25 million dollar estate that's just as unapologetic as he is, of course.
According to Trulia, the palatial retirement home—located in Beverly Hills because obviously— features six bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a cocktail bar, a private cinema with its own concession bar and a separate guest house. Mayweather will still probably spend more time zipping back and forth between bookies aboard some gold-trimmed NetJet than he will at his new bachelor pad, but as these photos prove, when he’s not wheels-up, he’ll be living large in the lingerie-clad lap of luxury.

Rory McIlroy risks another soccer injury to show off some pretty slick juggling skills
This is not quite Greg Norman going back to using a chainsaw level of danger, but Rory McIlroy is back to playing soccer. And it turns out he's got some pretty slick juggling skills.

McIlroy put his soccer talents on display as part of Cristiano Ronaldo's CR7 Challenge. Apparently, if you impress the soccer superstar enough, you can win a whole bunch of his fragrance products. We're guessing the four-time major champ isn't just doing this for some cologne, but in any matter, here's his (impressive) entry:

Of course, McIlroy ruptured a ligament in his left ankle, which caused him to miss trying to defend his British Open title in 2015. When he returned to the tournament in 2016, his rental home had a soccer pitch in the backyard, but he managed to avoid another injury — and it appears he made it through this video unharmed. Phew.
Now we wait in anticipation of those he tagged ..
Fall a great time for golf in San Diego
SAN DIEGO (AP) Summer sends vacationers flocking to the San Diego area, many of them bringing their golf clubs with them. Mild temperatures, great courses, superb conditions. What’s not to love?
But there may be a better time to head to San Diego for golf: Fall.
The courses are still in great shape, crowds are smaller, deals abound and the humid, cool and sometimes overcast weather known as the marine layer isn’t quite so persistent.
”It’s the perfect time to play golf in San Diego,” said Shawn Cox, director of golf at The Grand Golf Club in Del Mar. ”You’re getting the benefit of the perfect weather, the courses are in great shape and at offseason prices.”
The San Diego area has become one of the world’s top golf destinations, with around 90 courses in diverse settings from the beaches to the mountains. The list of courses includes some of the best in the country, including The Grand, Maderas Golf Club, La Costa Spa and Resort, Aviara Golf Club and Coronado Municipal. The most..
