Duke fans got some great news on Saturday ahead of the Blue Devils' matchup with the No. 2 ranked Virginia Cavaliers when they found out rival North Carolina lost on home court in an overtime heartbreaker to North Carolina State, 95-91. The No. 10 ranked Tar Heels entered the game as a 12.5-point favorite, making it an even uglier loss on their resume.
But the Cameron Crazies couldn't celebrate for long, as they watched their team fall behind quickly in the first half against coach Tony Bennett's UVA team, one that ranks first in the country in points allowed per game. Duke rallied in the second half, even taking the lead on a few occasions and looking like they'd run away with it, but the Cavaliers hung on and won 65-63, giving Bennett the first win of his coaching career inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. But there was another piece of history made, and not the good kind, for Duke and North Carolina basketball. For the first time since 1973, both Duke and UNC lost on home court, on the same day:
