Raise your hand if you declared Jordan Spieth the best bet for the British Open and then didn’t bet on him at the British Open? Yep, I’m raising my hand. If ever I needed a reminder to stick with my gut, that was it, but hopefully, others listened to me and actually profited. Anyway, the PGA Tour moves on from the British Open to the Canadian Open, and to discuss the field at Glen Abbey Golf Club, Spieth’s historic win at Royal Birkdale, and my historic chocolate eating in England, Joel Beall joined me for our weekly chat. Please have a listen:
And if you're more old school and would rather just read my normal weekly fantasy golf picks, here's my fab foursome at Glen Abbey:
Dustin Johnson: Can you believe this guy hasn’t won in four months? DJ is coming off a strange weekend at the British Open where he shot a Saturday 64 to get into the mix before shooting the worst round of the day (77) on Sunday. It’s time for the World No. 1 to get things going for the season’s stretch run, and he has two runner-ups at Glen Abbey.
Scott Stallings: Stallings’ lone top 10 in four tries at this event didn’t come at Glen Abbey, but he looks to be rounding into form following a rough 2016 in the wake of a three-month suspension for mistakenly using a banned substance. The three-time PGA Tour winner is coming off a T-5 at the John Deere and a T-3 at the Barbasol.
THE GRIND: Jordan Spieth's legend grows & Britain's biggest edge over the U.S.
Jim Furyk: Next year’s U.S. Ryder Cup captain showed he’s still the ultimate grinder by playing in the Barbasol Championship after not qualifying for the British Open for the first time in 20 years. His two wins in this event didn’t come at Glen Abbey, but he has three top 15s in a row at the Jack Nicklaus design, including a solo fourth in 2015.
Grayson Murray: The worst part of Murray’s maiden PGA Tour victory last week at the Barbasol Championship? It didn’t count for my fantasy league because it was an opposite-field event. Still, this 23-year-old has gotten hot in his rookie campaign and is finally making headlines for more than his Twitter feed. For my team’s sake, I’m hoping he has another great finish in him in the Great White North this week.
Just missed: Charley Hoffman and Ian Poulter.
And for those of you playing other fantasy golf formats:
Yahoo! lineup: Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Charley Hoffman, Scott Stallings (Starters); Kevin Streelman, Adam Hadwin, Daniel Summerhays, Grayson Murray (Bench).
Knockout/One-and-done pick: Jim Furyk.
