Summer of ’76 focuses on intersection of Open Championship, pop culture and European golf resurgence

Golf documentaries are often focused on a player or event. Though Summer of '76 centers on that year's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, it breaks the mold by looking outside the sport's horizons.
Make no mistake: there's plenty of golf to be found in the new Golf Channel film, with its heart devoted to Johnny Miller's victory in Southport. It also explores how the performance of a 19-year-old Seve Ballesteros — who owned a three-shot lead over Miller at one point on Sunday, only finish in second by six shots — was the catalyst for European resurgence in the game, signaling a wave of incoming talent that would eventually culminate in the continent's domination of the Ryder Cup a decade later.

An iconic Arnold Palmer item from his 1961 British Open win at Birkdale will be up for auction

This will be the first Open Championship conducted since the passing of Arnold Palmer, so perhaps it's fitting the tournament returns to Royal Birkdale. For it was in Southport where the King won his first Champion of the Year title in 1961, besting Dai Rees for the claret jug. And, while Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan did their share for the tournament's prestige in the United States, it was Palmer's victory that is widely credited for popularizing the event among American tour pros.
“I felt then and I still do that you had to win internationally to be considered a great player,” Palmer said. “I did what I had to do to be considered a player of some circumstance.”
With all eyes on Birkdale this week, Heritage Auctions — which handled a host of Palmer memorbilla this winter — has announced an iconic Palmer memorbilla item from his Open triumph is up for auction.

Coupled with his sound 2017 campaign, don't be surprised if there's a Dufner score board sighting.
Same goes with Grace. He's seen a precipitous drop in the world rankings since last year's Open (10th to 35th), yet he's shown signs of a turnaround, with four top 15s in his last six outings. Grace has posted four top 5s in majors since 2015, ..
