Is Max Scherzer the most batsh-t crazy pitcher ever? He’s up there

Patrick SmithEarlier this week, Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer broke his nose while (somewhat lazily) practicing his bunting, the latest victory for the “universal DH” crowd. A less insane pitcher/human probably would have at least skipped his next start, or even missed more time in the increasingly careful new-world MLB, where players miss a game if they have the sniffles. Mad Max? He was on the mound two days later against the Philles, throwing seven scoreless innings, striking out 10 batters, giving up just four hits and notching his sixth victory of the season. He did get the nose checked out, but only to satisfy team doctors.

“Trust me, this thing looks a lot worse than it actually is,” Scherzer said after the game. “I felt zero pain. There’s been plenty of other injuries where I felt a lot of pain and I’ve had to pitch through. I’ll hang my hat on those starts, but tonight I felt zero pain. This ..

Wilson Contreras crushes two homers in three innings, throws up the horns to White Sox dugout

In recent weeks, the decades-long cold war between batters and pitchers—a tenuous diplomatic ceasefire tested off and on over the years—has bloomed into a full-fledged firestorm. Walker Buehler is shouting at fools to “sit the f—k down” after strikeouts, Max Muncy is telling MadBum to put on his water wings, and, on Wednesday night, the Cubs' Wilson Contreras launched a contraband ICBM (Inter-Chicago Ballistic Missile), throwing up the horns to the White Sox dugout after smacking his second homer in three innings (the first of which, we should probably mention, was a grand slam).
The armistice is well and truly over, America. Seek shelter wherever you can.

Despite being a veritable declaration of war, Chicago baseball, quite frankly, could use exactly that. Like Yankees-Mets, Chicago's interleague rivalry has long been overshadowed by its divisional brethren (Yanks-Sox, Cubs-Cards), but perhaps Contreras' complete and t..

Minor league outfielder forgets score, tosses ball in play into the stands, costs team game

Thanks to the internet, minor league baseball has become a content factory. Whether it be comical new rule changes, hilarious promotions or announcers who display cat-like reflexes, the minors are always good for a little absurdity. What happened in a Triple-A game on Wednesday night may have out-absurded all the absurd-ness mentioned above.

In the bottom of the 10th of a game between the Scranton Railriders (Yankees Triple-A affiliate) and the Norfolk Tides (Orioles affiliate), Tides right fielder Anderson Feliz completely forgot the score. This was a tiny problem, because his team was winning 6-5. The RailRiders got to place a runner on second per the new, worst rule in the history of American sport, and then shortstop Breyvic Valera smacked a game-tying double to right field. Feliz, not realizing he team was up by a run, lazily ran after the ball and then tossed it into the stands, which allowed Valera to reach h..
