Doc Redman, a Clemson sophomore, even delivered a dramatic ending befitting the stage, the United States Amateur Championship at Riviera Country Club. He came back from 2 down with two to play, then defeated Texas senior Doug Ghim with a conceded birdie on the 37th hole that followed 36 holes of entertaining punching and counterpunching.
Spider Miller, the captain of the U.S. Walker Cup team, called it “the greatest match that I’ve witnessed in my four years of following intently the amateur game.”
Ghim called it “an incredible match. We didn’t give each other anything all afternoon. We worked for eve..

(Photo by William Howard/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)With two missed cuts and a WD in a three-year span at the Wyndham Championship, there’s little wonder that Henrik Stenson for years chose to skip the PGA Tour’s regular-season finale. Not to mention it comes amid a busy stretch of golf and precedes the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
The 41-year-old Swede decided to return to Sedgefield Country Club this year, though. First and foremost, adding the trip to Greensboro, N.C., would help him hit his minimum number of tournaments required on the tour.
He ended up getting a lot more out of it than that.
Stenson bookended a couple of 66s with an opening 62 and a closing 64 to win by one stroke over Ollie Schniederjans. It was Stenson’s first victory since the 2016 British Open and first in the U.S. since 2013..

(Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)Not since last October at the WGC-HSBC Champions had we seen Henrik Stenson in contention with a chance to win on Sunday. But it's a place the 2016 British Open champion has been in many times before, and his experience in those situations showed on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship, the PGA Tour's final regular-season event of 2016-'17. The Swede posted a final-round six-under 64 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., that included birdies on four of his final six holes to prevail by one stroke over Ollie Schniederjans.
Stenson, 41, made four birdies and two bogeys on his first seven holes, then began a quiet streak of pars for the next five holes. The late charge began at the par-4 13th, wher..

(Photo by Chris Condon/PGA TOUR)On a weekend where match-play competition dominated the golf scene, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open produced its own one-on-one showdown. Scott McCarron and Kevin Sutherland separated themselves from the rest of the PGA Tour Champions field on Sunday at En-Joie Country Club in Endicott, N.Y., sharing the lead for most of the back nine until McCarron finished birdie-birdie-birdie to close with a bogey-free 64 and win his third senior title of 2017.
Friends since their high school days in Northern California, the duo started the day at 12 under par, McCarron having shot an 11-under 61 on Saturday to jump into contention after an opening 71. Each played the opening nine holes Sunday in four under par, Sutherland holing out ..

(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)Although perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Henrik Stenson's bag is that he played this week without a driver (his 13-degree Callaway Diablo Tour 3-wood serving as the longest club in his bag), it was Stenson’s iron game and putting that won the Wyndham Championship for him Sunday.
In a dogfight with Ollie Schniederjans, Stenson nailed an iron shot from 229 yards on the par-5 15th to 21 feet, setting up an easy two-putt birdie. On the following hole he seemed to apply the dagger when he staked an 8-iron from 170 yards on the par-3 16th and then converted that putt for another birdie.
Stenson’s irons are Callaway’s Legacy Black, a cavity-back model only sold in Asia. Stenson has used the irons for several ye..
