Column: PGA to May the critical piece in golf’s new schedule
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) The timing for a revamped PGA Tour schedule could not have been more appropriate.
This is the 50-year anniversary of the PGA Tour breaking away from the PGA of America, leading to years of disharmony. Well, as much as this gentile game allows. And yet all these years later, it took a strong relationship between the two organizations for American-based golf to get the schedule it wanted.
Next season’s schedule was released Tuesday, and there were lots of moving parts, most of them already known.
The FedEx Cup playoffs have been reduced from four events to three, with the opening event alternating between the New York area and Boston. The season will end at the Tour Championship on Aug. 25, allowing the richest payoff in golf – expect that $10 million FedEx Cup prize to increase significantly next year – to be awarded before fans shift their interest to college football and the NFL.

Russell Knox has slow road to top 50 and quick fall
Russell Knox entered the world ranking in 2009 when he played his first Web.com Tour event at age 24. A year later, he cracked the top 1,000 with a tie for seventh in Knoxville. It took another four years before Knox cracked the top 100 following a top 10 at Hilton Head. And then two years later, he cashed in by winning a World Golf Championship in Shanghai to move into the top 50.
And that’s where he stayed for 93 consecutive weeks, reaching as high as No. 18 after his victory in the Travelers Championship in 2016. Life was good. He was in all the majors, all the WGCs, and he even played in the Hero World Challenge that Tiger Woods hosts in the Bahamas.
”I saw how good a place that was,” Knox said after his playoff victory in the Irish Open. ”I think I tried to get better too quickly. I’ve kind of preached to myself and younger players my whole career that you get better slowly without forcing it, without trying to get better.”
His golf got worse. Knox had only eight top 10s in his..
Gordon Hayward, who has two daughters, is having a third, and he seems THRILLED about it
My issues with gender reveal videos are well-documented. Even if they feature a live Bill Murray or a live alligator, I don't care, nor does anyone else. Yet every time I say that, another comes along that makes me re-evaluate that stance, like this one from Boston Celtics small forward Gordon Hayward, who brought new meaning to the phrase “I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed” when finding out the gender of his third child on the way.

You see, Hayward and his wife Robyn have two young daughters, Charlie and Bernie. Like any dad with two girls, Hayward was holding out hope that No. 3 would be a boy, which we are safely assuming based on this hilarious reaction of feigned excitement from the 2017 NBA All Star:

Tiger and Phil’s “big bet,” a PGA Tour WAG throws shade, and Brooks Koepka keeps enjoying life as U.S. Open champ
Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we truly sympathize with Kevin Na. Up to a point. You see, it also took me eight long years to get my first win on my annual golf trip, and overall, I have a Na-like record of nine (or so — I stopped keeping track) runner-ups to go with just a handful of victories. There’s just one big, BIG difference between us. Kevin Na has made $27 MILLION in on-course earnings despite just two titles while I’ve lost money when you factor in the three champions dinners I’ve had to foot the bill for. Even if they're usually at Chili's. Anyway, let's talk about Na and everything else happening during a busy week in golf.
WE'RE BUYING
Kevin Na: No matter how much prize money you earn, nothing takes the place of winning and we saw that with an emotional Na after his five-shot romp at the Greenbrier. At first, I just thought Na was choked up over getting a congratulatory text from Tiger Woods (I know that I would be), but then he turned t..

Jimmy Buffett caddied in a U.S. Senior Women’s Open practice round, thus making it the chillest round ever
Practice rounds, even at a major, are typically laid back affairs, especially on Mondays, when players are just getting their weeks started and feeling everything out. On Monday at the inaugural U.S. Senior Women's Open at Chicago Golf Club, the laid back level turned all the way up to 11, reaching volcanic vibes of chill the likes of which golf has never seen. That's because Jimmy Buffett, Mayor of Margaritaville, was in attendance:

Buffett, in town for a concert at Wrigley Field on Friday, caddied for his niece Patricia Ehrhart, an amateur player competing in the event. Ehrhart is a former LPGA pro that left the tour to start a family in the late 90s and eventually got her amateur status back when she was 48. The Honolulu, Hawaii resident qualified for the U.S. Senior Women's Open in mid-June at Fairwood Golf & Country Club in Renton, Wash. Just last year, she made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Senior Women's Am..
Act quickly and you could caddie for a PGA Tour winner THIS week!
Scott HalleranSteven Bowditch and his caddie discuss a shot at the 2015 AT&T Byron Nelson.Did you ever want to caddie for a PGA Tour winner? Well, this is your chance.
Steven Bowditch took to Twitter on Monday night to seek someone to carry his bag at this week’s John Deere Classic. And he did it in the self-deprecating fashion we’ve come to expect from the two-time PGA Tour winner as he gave himself only a 1-percent chance of making it to Sunday's final round.

Talk about the ultimate temp job.
Although, it doesn’t necessarily have to be so temporary. One responder asked whether he could also caddie for Bowditch at next week’s Open Championship if the Aussie happens to win this week and qualify for the season’s third major. “Without doubt. Not even a question,” Bowditch replied.

PGA Tour season to end before football next year
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) The PGA Tour has eliminated a FedEx Cup playoff event as part of a revamped, tighter schedule that will allow its season to end a week before the football season begins in the United States.
Most of the changes to the 2018-19 schedule released Tuesday already had been announced. The final piece was where to put two new tournaments between the U.S. Open and British Open. Detroit-based Quicken Loans is calling its event the Rocket Mortgage Classic on June 27-30. It will be followed by the 3M Open in Minnesota and the John Deere Classic.
The tour will feature 46 events over 41 weeks, down from 48 tournaments this year.
The addition of new tournaments in Detroit and Minnesota is offset by eliminating the FedEx Cup playoff event in Boston, the Quicken Loans National that had been run by the Tiger Woods Foundation in the Washington, D.C. area, and a year off for the Houston Open and Greenbrier.
Houston and Greenbrier are to return to the fall portion of the s..
