How Brooks Koepka won fans for life in his Southampton neighborhood last week

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — PGA Tour players don't typically advertise where they're staying when they rent a house for a week, but there are certain tell-tale signs. A U.S. Open-logoed Lexus courtesy car parked in the driveway, for instance. Or sometimes even the golfer himself emerging with his clubs over his shoulder.
Regardless, one evening early last week, Brooks Koepka received a knock on the door of his Southampton rental house, and he opened it to find a kid from the neighborhood asking for his autograph.
“Which never happens,” Jena Sims, Koepka's girlfriend said. “Then word on our street literally spread.”

As the week progressed and Koepka worked his way into contention at the U.S. Open, his base of neighborhood supporters grew. And when he rose Sunday to head to the golf course, he spied these signs on the corner on his way over.

Grandmother goes viral for blessing entire Mexico national team before World Cup upset

Just about the time Tommy Boy Fleetwood was heating up at the U.S. Open on Sunday, the Mexican national team was cooling down following a stunning World Cup victory over defending world champions Germany in Moscow. The party for the fans who travelled halfway around the world just to eat borscht in the dead of summer was just getting started, of course, but amid the tears, singing, proposals, and liver-pureeing levels of vodka consumption, it was a lone grandmother who became the de-facto mascot of Mexico's unlikely group stage triumph:

Sports fans are a superstitious bunch. We know this. Much like Sister Jean's rise to stardom back in March, however, there's just something about the sight on 60-something-year-old woman, plate of food in hand, crossing each and every player the Mexico starting lineup—including goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, who she blesses not once, but THREE times—that has the entire world (German..

Wait a minute, Mo Bamba has the NBA’s biggest wingspan AND smoothest jumper?!

If Mo Bamba's only chance of scoring points was by dunking, he'd still be one of the top picks in Thursday's NBA Draft. The 7-footer who just turned 20 last month is an absolute terror on defense, blocking 3.7 shots per game as a freshman at Texas. But on the offensive end, the man with an NBA combine-record 7-foot-10(!) wingspan is capable of more than dunking. Apparently, a lot more.

Check out this viral video making the rounds Monday morning. If you just focus on the ball, you'd think it was a clip of Stephen Curry shooting three-pointers. Instead, it's Big Mo. Wait, can we call you Big Mo? Sorry, probably should have asked a man of your stature for permission first. Anyway, check out the jaw-dropping clip:

Good lord, is that impressive. So he's got the biggest wingspan, the smoothest jumper, AND the best name/n..

Column: Koepka could use more wins, but his trophies are big

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) Brooks Koepka now has as many majors as Greg Norman and as many PGA Tour victories as Pat Perez.

Koepka belongs in the conversation of elite players in his generation by winning his second U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, a test that asked an entirely different set of questions than the U.S. Open he won last year at Erin Hills.

Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are the only players in their 20s to have won multiple majors, at least for now.

And while the 28-year-old Koepka is only in his fourth full year on the PGA Tour, to see his supreme performance at Shinnecock Hills makes it hard to believe he has only one other PGA Tour title. That was three years ago at the Phoenix Open.

That’s likely to change. It might have to for Koepka to get the recognition he deserves, even if that’s not what drives him.

His record should get anyone’s attention.

Koepka has finished among the top 15 in nine of his past 10 majors starting with the 2015 Bri..

Minnesota gets regular PGA Tour stop in 7-year deal

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) The PGA Tour is putting Minnesota on its schedule for the first time under an agreement that elevates a PGA Tour Champions event.

The 3M Open Fund will start its seven-year deal next summer.

The 2019 dates for the 3M Open will not be announced until the PGA Tour reveals its full schedule in the coming weeks.

Minnesota has hosted the 3M Championship on the PGA Tour Champions since 1993, and the final event for seniors will be Aug. 3-5 with Paul Goydos as the defending champion. The PGA Tour event will be held on the same course, the TPC Twin Cities.

For years, the best golfers have come to Minnesota for big events, most recently the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in 2016. Hazeltine also hosted the PGA Championship in 2009 and 2002, and it held the 1970 U.S. Open won by Tony Jacklin.

The PGA Tour found room on the schedule for the 3M Open when the Houston Open announced it was moving to the fall starting in 2019.

Minnesota is known for its ..

Koepka’s golf legacy secured after 2nd straight Open win

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) For a guy who has won all of three PGA Tour events, Brooks Koepka has a golf legacy that already is secure.

That’s how it should be for winning back-to-back U.S. Opens.

Koepka became the first man to turn that impressive trick in nearly three decades by handling a Shinnecock Hills course that varied from beastly to benign. His one-stroke victory Sunday over Tommy Fleetwood even topped Koepka’s first major victory a year ago at Erin Hills.

Article continues below …

”I don’t want to say I didn’t think I could do it, but I knew that it was going to be that much more difficult,” Koepka said after closing with a 2-under 68 and a 1-over 281 total. ”And to finally do it, it’s much more gratifying the second time. I can really appreciate how hard it is to win a major, and to win back-to-back is special, and my second major is cool.”

Even better is that he won on two different style courses. Erin Hills had spacious fairways. Shinnecock Hills had tighter landing are..

Dustin Johnson’s US Open hopes fade on back 9

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) Dustin Johnson had a four-stroke lead after 36 holes and was still in striking distance heading onto the back nine in the final round of the U.S. Open.

Instead of making a move, he lost ground.

The 2016 champion three-putted three times on the back nine at Shinnecock Hills, shooting an even-par 70 on Sunday to finish third, two strokes back, as workout buddy and final-round partner Brooks Koepka claimed his second U.S. Open title in a row.

Article continues below …

”When we’re all done, he’s going to win another one,” Koepka said. ”I mean, we all know that. … He’s one of the best to ever play the game.”

After winning at Oakmont, Johnson missed the cut at Erin Hills last year. Unable to defend his title over the weekend, he called Koepka to give him advice on how to win the tournament.

This year in the Hamptons, the two players worked out together before each of the last two rounds but kept things professional from tee to green.

”We talked a lot more when..
