PGA president arrested on DUI charge

INDIO, Calif. (AP) PGA of America President Paul Levy is facing a misdemeanor DUI charge after veering off a road in California and hitting a sign last week.

The PGA of America says it will support Levy as he seeks counseling and deals with the consequences of his arrest.

Palm Desert police says Levy was on Highway 111 late Thursday when he veered off the road and struck the sign. A report from the sheriff’s office says he was not injured, but police said he showed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. He was taken to a hospital as a precaution, and then booked into the Riverside County Jail.

Levy, who was general manager of Toscana Country Club in Indian Wells, took over as PGA president in November 2016. This is his final year of a two-year term.

US Open hopes ultimate test doesn’t feature trick questions

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) The U.S. Open wants to be the ultimate test in golf, and sometimes that leads to a series of trick questions.

One of them was 14 years ago at Shinnecock Hills.

A year after Jim Furyk tied the U.S. Open scoring record at Olympia Fields, the 2004 U.S. Open was so bone dry and lightning fast that only three players broke par on the weekend, none on Sunday. Fans having to move to the side because of a golf ball rolling toward them is not unusual, except when the player hit the shot with his putter from the green. Tee shots that landed on the seventh green rolled off the putting surface and into a bunker.

One year after Rory McIlroy broke the U.S. Open scoring record at Congressional, no one broke par at Olympic Club in 2012 when Webb Simpson won.

Moments like this lead to criticism that the USGA overreacts. Justin Rose sees it another way.

”When everything is in balance, it’s kind of boring,” he said. ”And I think in life, the closer..

Is this the week Rickie Fowler breaks through in a major?

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) Rickie Fowler knows he can win major championships. He says everyone in golf knows that. So, Rickie, how about this week in the U.S. Open?

Majors have not been kind to Fowler, who either gets teased or slammed by them. In April, he came up one shot short of Patrick Reed at the Masters. Fowler also was runner-up at both the U.S. and British Opens in 2014. In all, he has eight top-five finishes in Grand Slam events.

He also has missed cuts in seven majors.

So, once again, he was asked Wednesday: Rickie, how about this week?

”Yeah, definitely I’ve been very close,” Fowler said. ”I feel like there’s a few you could look at and say, if it wasn’t for that one guy, we would have won. There was a couple of majors where there was a runaway or someone just happened to play just that little bit better. There’s some scores that I’ve shot that have been good enough to win majors, but we haven’t been able to get it done that specific week.

”Yo..

Beep Beeeeeep! Traffic greets US Open golfers at Shinnecock

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) The world’s best golfers are crossing their fingers and hoping for luck as they head to Shinnecock Hills for the U.S. Open this week.

It’s not the pin placements or green speeds they’re worried about.

Not the weather or the depth of the rough, either.

It’s the Long Island traffic that has snarled their commutes to the course, stranding them on two- and four-lane roads, staring at brake lights for hours on trips that would otherwise be as short as 15 minutes.

”It’s the worst traffic I’ve ever dealt with at a golf tournament,” said Brian Stuard, a pro since 2005 who left at 6 a.m. for his Monday practice round and still needed more than two hours to get to the course. ”I’m still trying to figure it out.”

Long a haven for New York City-dwellers eager to flee the pavement for the beach, the Hamptons are hardly new to traffic: The morning crawl of builders, landscapers and other laborers on their way to job sites is known locally as t..

The last time that happened was 2004, when Phil Mickelson won his first major. At the time, Jim Furyk (U.S. Open), Ben Curtis (British) and Shaun Micheel were the reigning champions.

But it’s not just the majors.

The United States also won the most recent Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup, Solheim Cup and Walker Cup.

The Latest: Rain just what USGA wanted on eve of US Open

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) The Latest on the U.S. Open, golf’s second major championship of the year (all times local):

2:25 p.m.

The USGA prefers the U.S. Open to be played in firm, dry and fast conditions. It was raining Wednesday, so USGA chief executive Mike Davis was all smiles.

Article continues below …

Davis says the forecast for the four days of competition calls for plenty of sunshine and enough breeze to make Shinnecock Hills play the way it should. He says the light rain on Wednesday is keeping the course from getting too fast before Thursday’s opening round, and it will allow the USGA to have more control over how firm the ground gets.

Davis also says he has changed some of the pin positions because of the wind expected for the opening round.

The last time the U.S. Open was at Shinnecock Hills, in 2004, the course became so bone dry that golf balls wouldn’t stay on the seventh green and only three players broke par on the weekend.

Rickie Fowler shares his simple reason for getting engaged the week before the U.S. Open

Andrew RedingtonSOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Maybe Rickie Fowler isn't as romantic as we all thought. We swooned when he shared those photos of him on bended knee on a Hamptons beach the week before the U.S. Open — what a magical moment! — and thought he had pulled off a well-thought-out plan in getting girlfriend Allison Stokke to say yes. Turns out, there wasn't much of a plan at all.
“Well, nothing against the area,” Fowler began after being asked by a local reporter about the significance of the proposal's location. “It wasn't necessarily — there was nothing planned out. I just really didn't want to carry the ring around any longer.”
THE GRIND: Rickie Fowler's proposal & a golf summit we'd like to see
I just really didn't want to carry the ring around any longer is a feeling a lot of guys in Fowler's position have felt. Heck, I thought I was going to have to throw out the pants I proposed in because it felt like the ring was actually burning ..
