Astros owner to run Houston Open; will return in fall 2019
The Houston Open will not be on the PGA Tour schedule next season as it prepares for a move to the fall under the guidance of Houston Astros owner Jim Crane.
The PGA Tour announced Tuesday that it has a five-year agreement with the Astros Foundation to run the Houston Open starting in the fall of 2019. The date of the tournament was not announced. The prize money will be $7.5 million.
The Astros Foundation will use a consortium of local sponsors for financial support of the tournament.

The Houston Open has been without a title sponsor since Shell Oil declined to renew its contract after the 2017 tournament. The Houston Golf Association ran it without a title sponsor this year, and the tour struggled to find a replacement.
The move to the fall opens a spot on next year’s schedule for the 3M Championship in Minnesota to move to the PGA Tour. The Minnesota event has been a PGA Tour Champions event since 1993.

Jason Day says burrito-wielding Bubba Watson is a messy newcomer to PGA Tour’s RV community
Icon SportswireSOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — Jason Day has never been happier to have his RV at a golf tournament than this week. Battling Long Island traffic has become a big topic in the Shinnecock Hills media center this week (at least, among the media), but it's not problem for the former World No. 1.
“I think a lot of people have been struggling with traffic coming into it, and I'm 30 seconds away from the parking lot,” Day said, “which is nice.”
Good for you, Jason. Good for you. . .

But that's not the point of this post. The point of this post is that the PGA Tour's RV community welcomed a newcomer this year. He's a two-time Masters champ — and apparently, he's kind of a slob. So on the Tuesday before the 2018 U.S. Open, Day told a funny story involving Bubba Watson, a burrito and his traveling home. Take it away, Jason:
“Bubba just got one this year, and I'm very kind..
The player who shoots highest score on Shinnecock Hills’s 7th hole this week will win a free trip to Belize
David CannonFor a little 188-yard par 3, the 7th hole at Shinnecock Hills's has quite the history. During the final round of the 2004 U.S. Open, the devilish reimagining of North Berwick's “Redan” hole—rendered virtually unplayable by dry, windy conditions—became a lightning rod for the USGA, with as many players (three) making birdie as triple bogey. When all was said and done and the numbers were tallied, only one in three tee shots had found the putting surface over 72 holes of play.
This time around promises to be different. The USGA doesn't want to water the green between every single final round pairing any more than you want to sit there and watch them, but if the 7th hole goes rogue again, at least this time there's a silver lining: The player who shoots the highest single score on the hole during the 2018 U.S. Open will win a five night, all-expenses-paid trip for two to Belize as part of the Belize Tourism Board's Great Blue Hole Challenge [full Wheel..
The Latest: Reed notices benefits of Masters win

If you blinked, you might have missed Justin Thomas’ reign atop golf’s world ranking.

The PGA champion took the top spot in May. It’s gone, with Dustin Johnson’s win at Memphis last weekend catapulting him to No. 1, with Thomas just behind.
Of course, a win at Shinnecock Hills in the U.S. Open this week would push Thomas back to the top.
”It didn’t affect me, or it wasn’t that hard on me because I couldn’t do anything about it,” Thomas said. ”I wasn’t playing. I played one tournament and had a good tournament, finished eighth. And D.J. won, so it’s not like he didn’t play well and didn’t earn it or anything. He won a golf tournament and a great tournament. So there’s nothing I can be upset about for that.”
Thomas could even laugh a bit about the ranking.
”I saw something that was just hysterical on social media,” he explained,..

Patrick Reed, Masters champion.

That’s how Reed always can be introduced after his victory at Augusta National in April. When he plays Shinnecock Hills at this week’s U.S. Open, that title carries a lot more than simply status for him.
”It’s been a whirlwind for sure,” Reed said of becoming a major tournament winner. ”It’s awesome to be able to reflect on succeeding in something you’ve desired and worked so hard: being Masters champion. To be able to come to the U.S. Open after winning the last major adds a little more confidence and self-belief about being able to win the tournament because you’ve done it before.”
Regardless of how many tournaments or majors he wins, Reed doesn’t see the challenge as being where he might rank on a list of champions, though he wants plenty more titles. It’s more about his maximum performances.
”Me vs. myself,” he said. ”If I go out there and se..
Woods missed US Open, surprised he’s still at 14 majors
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) Tiger Woods returned to the U.S. Open for the first time in three years and hardly anyone noticed.
Then again, it was late Sunday afternoon. Shinnecock Hills was practically empty.
”A bizarre experience,” said Jordan Spieth, who played nine holes with him.

Such a quiet moment was rare for Woods in his celebrated return following four back surgeries. A year that began with intrigue soon gave way to hysteria over anticipation of his first victory in nearly five years.
That time has not arrived as Woods heads into the second major of the year.
”Golf is always frustrating,” Woods said Tuesday after going nine holes with Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau, winners of the last two PGA Tour events. ”There’s always something that isn’t quite right, and that’s where we as players have to make adjustments. You’ve seen the tournaments I’ve played this year. There’s always something. Hopefully, this is one of those weeks where I put it all..
Woods missed US Open, surprised he’s still at 14 majors
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) A year ago, while watching the U.S. Open on television as he recovered from another back surgery, Tiger Woods had no idea if he’d ever compete again in what he calls ”our national championship.”
On Tuesday, he spoke about playing Shinnecock Hills as an opportunity to add to his three U.S. Open titles, but also as filling a hole in his existence after skipping the last two. This is his 20th U.S. Open.
”I missed playing the U.S. Open,” Woods said. ”It’s our national title and it has meant so much to me in my career. The biggest event you can win when I was growing up, it was a USGA event. To have won nine times is pretty special.”
