Tiger Woods’ biggest fan might be a fellow PGA Tour pro

Tiger Woods' latest comeback has thrilled golf fans far and wide, but some of his biggest supporters are golfers who are now teeing it up on the PGA Tour themselves. From Sam Burns at the Honda Classic to Macckenzie Hughes at the Players, it seems Woods gets paired with a young star who grew up idolizing the 14-time major champ each week, and Sunday at the Memorial was no different. Except now, we may have finally identified the world's biggest Tiger Woods fan.
Whee Kim wound up drawing a final-round tee time with Tiger, and boy, did he savor it — even if neither played particularly well. Woods' 72 nipped Kim's 73 as both fell out of the top 10. Check out the photo with Woods Kim posted on Sunday night — and read the entire caption that went with it:

Very cool.
“He's still alive and he's still the greatest,” Kim writes. “It'll never change.” Love it. And that last line seems to be a reference to Woods' legendary dawn pa..

Missed Connection: Padres fan who caught a foul ball in her beer and chugged it last night

To the Petco Park stranger who caught a foul ball in your beer last night and then chugged it in front of the entire stadium, I just wanted to say hi. I think I could love you to the top of the Western Metal Supply Co. building and back again. To the bottom of that Ballast Point, golden like Tony Gwynn's glove in the morning dew. Like Ron Burgundy loves Veronica Corningstone. I could even love that ball, covered in grit and sweat and hops, splashing forever into my Midsummer Night's Dream. You spilled a little, but that's OK. Nobody's perfect and neither am I. Really hope you see this, but if not, that's OK too.
P.S. I know this is crazy, but…

High school golfer self-reports violation, loses state title

DELL RAPIDS, S.D. (AP) A South Dakota high school golfer cost herself and her team a state championship when she self-reported an error she’d made on her scorecard.

Sioux Falls Christian won the Class A girls state golf tournament on Tuesday, with senior Kate Wynja finishing first overall for the second year in a row. Wynja, who finished several shots ahead, realized she’d submitted an incorrect scorecard, crediting herself with a 4 on No. 18 instead of a 5.

”I knew I needed to tell them,” Wynja told the Argus Leader . ”It was really sad, mostly because I knew what the result would be. I knew that I would be disqualified, and it broke my heart for the team. But I knew I couldn’t leave without saying something.”

She and her coach reported the violation to tournament directors, who had no choice but to disqualify her. That also meant her team finished second, not first.

Dan Swartos, a tournament director, called the situation ”awful.”

”I have so much res..

NHL ref, cancer survivor, and total legend qualifies for 2018 U.S. Open

Icon SportswireNot all heroes wear capes, but for Garrett Rank—NHL referee, certified badass, and probable off-hours crime fighter—that's because it's really tough to skate while wearing a velour parachute. Rank makes his heroism show in other ways, however. First of all, he's an NHL ref, which is just a fancy term for “pain magnet.” Second, he battled and beat testicular cancer back in 2011. Finally, he just qualified for the FREAKIN' U.S. OPEN (AKA your personal dream, but hey, let's not make this about you).
Rank qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills by shooting back-to-back 71s during a 36-hole qualifying event at Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Georgia on Monday. On the bag for Rank was fellow NHL ref Daniel O'Rourke, because hockey guys have to stick together, obviously.
The moment is sure to be intimidating for Rank, but he's not totally, er, green. Rank has finished runner-up at the U.S. Open Mid-Amateur Championship, 77th in the C..

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) Police have released more details about the crash that injured PGA Tour player Bud Cauley and three others in Ohio.

A report released Tuesday by Dublin police shows 37-year-old David Crawford was driving at the time of the crash near Muirfield Village Golf Club Friday night that also injured former NHL Columbus Blue Jackets player James Wisniewski.

Police say the car went off the right side of the road, hit a culvert and went airborne before striking a large tree. The car then hit several smaller trees before coming to rest in a ditch.

Cauley suffered broken ribs, a collapsed lung and a leg fracture. He later said the accident was the ”scariest night of my life.”

No charges have been filed as of Tuesday.

A tale of alternates in Memphis and for US Open

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Adam Scott and Russell Knox were among those who made it through 36 holes of U.S. Open qualifying. The next order of business was to call the FedEx St. Jude classic and express their regrets.

Perhaps no alternate list is more volatile than the PGA Tour event the week of U.S. Open qualifying.

Scott’s decision was easy. He had played five consecutive weeks on the PGA Tour before his qualifier. To play in Memphis, Tennessee, ahead of the U.S. Open would have meant seven straight weeks.

Article continues below …

That’s one reason Scott opted for a qualifier instead of trying to crack the top 60 after this week.

Ten players have withdrawn from Memphis, four of whom made it through qualifying – Scott, Knox, Patrick Rodgers and Ollie Schniederjans.

In turn, that has had an effect on the overall strength of field, which is likely to reduce the world ranking points to 36 for the winner. Only the AT&T Byron Nelson has offered fewer ranking points to the winner this ye..

One man’s desperate race to save his drone is the most dramatic thing you’ll watch all week

We all have inanimate objects we've assigned way too much meaning and/or importance. Maybe it's that lucky putter, the '91 Corolla you lost your virginity in, or the guitar you first learned to play “Wonderwall” on. But for Dave Svorking, fellow emotional investor in material goods, it's a drone. Dave likes piloting his drone, Dave likes shooting videos on his drone, and, on warm summer evenings, Dave even likes splitting a nice bottle of California red with his drone. Thus, when Dave's drone battery began to die while shooting over a lake, Dave did what any totally irrational man-child would do to save his favorite irrational man-child toy: He sprinted past an onlooking family, leaped into the water fully clothed, and swam like Phelps…

There's not a lot more to this video than that, but the sheer commitment and incredible timing—in which Dave reaches out and snags..

Column: Putnam latest example of not giving up on US Open

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Two players began U.S. Open qualifying by posting a 1-over 73, greatly increasing their odds of seeing Shinnecock Hills only on TV. They were tied for 61st in a sectional qualifier that offered only 14 spots.

Vijay Singh decided to call it a day.

He didn’t show up for the second round, perhaps because he didn’t have his game or the energy. Singh is 55, a three-time major champion and member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. He played his first U.S. Open a month before Jordan Spieth was born. He played his last one in 2012, when Spieth was the low amateur.

Article continues below …

Michael Putnam thought about joining Singh.

”Horrible,” he said about his opening round Monday.

Putnam has played enough qualifiers to know that anything worse than 2 under at Brookside usually doesn’t get it done. The 35-year-old from Tacoma, Washington, thought about getting an early start on the road to Chicago for this week’s Web.com Tour event. Instead, he drove 20 minutes to Th..
