The entire Mets broadcast team is officially at a loss for words

Kevin C. CoxSunday, April 15, despite being uncomfortably cold for a baseball game, was a great day for New York Mets fans. After starting the season 11-1, the Mets had finally lost a second game a day earlier, but responded with a 3-2 victory over the Milwuakee Brewers at Citi Field, powered by eight strikeouts from Noah Syndergaard and a walk-off homer from Wilmer Flores. The Mets were 12-2, off to the best start in franchise history, and all was well.

Fast forward to May 30 and all is no longer well. The Mets have crumbled as only the Mets can, going 14-24 in their next 38 games and losing key player after key player to injury. First it was veteran and great-clubhouse guy Todd Frazier, then it was Yoenis Cespedes, then Juan Lagares and then came the last straw on Tuesday, when Syndergaard was placed on the disabled list with a strained ligament in his right index finger and Steven Matz left the team's gam..

A golfer cameo on ‘American Ninja Warrior’ might only be a matter of time

NBCAMERICAN NINJA WARRIOR — “Dallas Qualifiers” Episode 1002 — Pictured: Brittany Hanks — (Photo by: Cooper Neill/NBC)INDIANAPOLIS — I’m standing in line to get my fancy “American Ninja Warrior” media pass, a red clip-on badge that announces to everyone, “F**k no I’m not doing this, it would aggravate my back arthritis,” but the kid behind me talks to me anyway, glancing quizzically at my snappy blazer/jeans combo before asking if I’m running the course. No no, I say, joking that I’m too old for that kind of thing. “Nah man, it’s OK,” he shoots back with a trainer’s enthusiasm, “Lots of old people run it.” Lots. Lots of OLD PEOPLE. Break an arm falling from a steel trapeze, pipsqueak, and don’t come crying to me in 15 years when all your energy-drink sugar turns into side fat and diabetes.
Now in its 10th season, NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” spends its springs traveling to a half-dozen cities before resolving into its finals in Las Vegas. Tonight they’re in Indy, dropping a giant ..

Trump promoting youth sports with event on South Lawn

WASHINGTON (AP) Taking his turn in the batting cage and swinging a golf club, President Donald Trump joined a group of famous athletes for a field day with kids at the White House on Wednesday as he kicked off an effort to increase youth participation in sports.

”Work hard, get in the game, play to win and, most of all, have a good time,” the president told the youngsters. He later told them to ”have a great life.”

His administration wants to reverse a trend of declining participating in athletic activity and to make youth sports more accessible to economically disadvantaged students.

At the event on the South Lawn, Trump also spotlighted members of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. The long-established group is headed by former New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera, retired beach volleyball Olympian Misty May-Treanor and ex-NFL running back Herschel Walker.

The time Nicklaus bet on himself at a US Open

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) Jack Nicklaus had small wagers in practice rounds during his time on the PGA Tour, just like everyone else. Some players before his time made more money in practice round bets than at the tournament when the prize money was small.

But he says he never had a wager with another player during a tournament.

He recalled only one time when he had money riding on the outcome, and he was still an amateur.

”The only wager I ever had was the 1960 U.S. Open,” Nicklaus said. ”It was a month before I was getting married. I was the U.S. Amateur champion and my dad said, `Hey, they got you at 35-1. You want some of that?’ I said, `I’ll have $20.’ He said, `You want place and show?’ I said, `I’m not here to place and show.”’

He was right about that.

Nicklaus had a chance to win until missing short putts down the stretch. He was paired the final round with Ben Hogan, who also had a chance to win until he hit into the water on the 17th hole. Arnold Pal..

Trump to hold a sports field day at the White House

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump wants to reverse a trend of fewer children participating in sports and make youth sports more accessible to economically disadvantaged students.

The White House is promoting the goals of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition on Wednesday and will hold a field day with the president on the South Lawn. Trump is expected to join athletes at stations that will include flag football, baseball, volleyball, golf, soccer and track and field.

Trump issued an executive order in February refocusing the council on youth sports as opposed to President Barack Obama’s emphasis on fitness and healthy eating. Trump, who played high school sports and is a competitive golfer, has sought to work with groups in the public and private sectors to address declining participation in youth sports.

Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and senior adviser, noted that the Aspen Institute found that 37 percent of children pl..
