Song leads Women’s World Championship by 2 shots

SINGAPORE (AP) Jennifer Song shot an opening 7-under 65 to take a two-stroke lead at the Women’s World Championship on Thursday.

The 28-year-old American reeled off seven birdies at the Sentosa Golf Club in a round that was interrupted for two hours by lightning.

Michelle Wie and Ji Eun-Hee (both 67) were tied for second while another nine players finished a further stroke back at 4 under.

Top-ranked Shanshan Feng (70) bogeyed the last hole, while No. 2 Lexi Thompson (75) struggled in making five bogeys.

Still chasing her first LPGA win eight years after turning professional, Song took the outright lead when she made five birdies in an eight-hole stretch.

”At times it has been a great struggle because I know I can win out here, but I just never have been given that chance yet,” Song said. ”But I kept believing that someday it will happen. I think that’s the reason why myself and other golfers are still grinding because we believe that we can win out he..

Shubhankar Sharma on a fast track from India

MEXICO CITY (AP) Each month brings a bigger stage and a new level of pedigree for Shubhankar Sharma.

He arrived in Mexico City for his first World Golf Championship at No. 75 in the world, making Sharma, at age 21, the highest-ranked player from India.

That’s not what made him eligible to compete against Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and the world’s best players for a $10 million prize fund. Sharma is the only two-time winner on the European Tour this season. He is leading the Race to Dubai.

And he hopes he is just getting started.

”I don’t want to dwell on the past,” Sharma said. ”I still have so many things to do to get to the PGA Tour, and that’s what I want to do.”

And to think Sharma might never have seen a golf course except for the most unusual coincidence.

Sharma and Anirban Lahiri – the player he replaced as India’s No. 1 – are both Army brats. Retired Col. Mohan Sharma was stationed at the same post as Lahiri’s father, a gynecologi..

Shots still matter over thin air at Mexico Championship

MEXICO CITY (AP) One of the intriguing aspects of the Mexico Championship is the thin air and the long ball.

Chapultepec Golf Club is approaching 7,800 feet above sea level, making it the highest altitude most of the players in this World Golf Championships event will see all year. The Joburg Open was close to 6,000 feet above sea level. The Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nevada, is about the same.

But that’s not what wins the tournament.

Just ask the defending champion.

Dustin Johnson still smiles at one of the best shots he hit all year – a sand wedge. His lead was down to one shot when Tommy Fleetwood made birdie on the 18th hole, and Johnson tugged his tee shot into a wicked spot in the bunker.

”The ball was below my feet. It was not sitting great,” Johnson said. ”And I didn’t really have anywhere to miss it coming out of where I was. It was either hit a good shot or I was probably going into a playoff.”

He hit one of the most underappreciated sh..

New York Yankees stud SMASHES homer over scoreboard in Spring Training game

As exciting as it is that Spring Training is here and baseball season is within reach, it's a reminder that none of these games matter until Opening Day. This next month is going to be especially hard for New York Yankee fans, who are already screaming “28 RINGS” from the mountaintop at the mere sight of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge side by side. And, I mean, how can you not …

But, before Wednesday, they hadn't even batted in the same lineup together. That changed when the lineup card came out ahead of their Grapefruit league matchup with the Detroit Tigers:

Oh baby, what time is Game 1 of the World Series in the Bronx!?? Only question is if Tanaka or Severino gets the start.
Ok, Ok, pump the brakes. Naturally, Judge struck out in his first at-bat, while Stanton followed with a single, putting the creation of their Monument Park plaques on hold for the time being. After Stanton, ..

JaVale McGee is using that viral Jon Stewart reaction to his shot as a Twitter profile pic

After a surprisingly good start to the season, things have not surprisingly fallen apart for the New York Knicks. Franchise cornerstone/unicorn Kristaps Porzingis tore his ACL earlier this month and the team, according to fivethirtyeight.com, has virtually no shot of making the playoffs. Not that it would matter. Without Porzingis, there's a better chance of Tim Hardaway Jr. winning NBA MVP than the Knicks getting out of the first round.

In any event, the most entertaining thing to come from this latest lost season at Madison Square Garden was the reaction by Jon Stewart during the team's latest loss to the Golden State Warriors on Monday. After Golden State's JaVale McGee hit a fadeaway jumper — we're pretty sure it's the first non-dunk field goal of his NBA career — cameras caught Stewart with his hands on his head in utter disbelief. Have a look at the look that quickly became an Internet meme:

Grab your tissues for this video of a college basketball player seeing his mom for the first time since 2013

Like my colleague Joel Beall pointed out on Monday with that feel-good Iowa free-throw story, there is still some hope for this great nation of ours. This latest, tear-jerking story courtesy of the Jacksonville State men's basketball team further confirms that notion.
Nobertas Giga, the Gamecocks' Lithuanian seven-foot senior center, has been on quite the journey since arriving in America in 2013. After spending his final season of high school at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, N.J, Giga was off to Florida State University to play for the Seminoles. Only he never did, instead spending a year at Tallahassee Community College, where he got in a little trouble with the law and ended up transferring to Midland College in Texas. Finally, he made his way to Jacksonville State, where he's been a huge contributor, starting over 60 games in the last two years. Like I said, quite the journey, and during that time the poor guy hasn't even seen his mother.
That was..

The fight-for-your-right-to-party dudes are back in court and still fighting for their right to party

Way back in December, we introduced you to Chad and JT, two 21st-century patriots who vent viral for their opposition to a new Los Angeles city council initiative to crack down on house parties in the Hollywood Hills. Exercising their right as American citizens and relying on experienced gained during a recent campaign to erect a Paul Walker (RIP) statue on the San Clemente pier, the pair—clad in “Bacon” beanies and Hawaiian shirts with ties—became instant heroes, racking up over half-a-million views on YouTube and logging appearances on major “news” networks like Fox “News” in the process.
Unfortunately, their righteous pleas went unheeded, and last week the LA City council passed its proposed house party ban like the dickhead principal in some John Hughes movie. Never ones to back down from a fight, however, on Tuesday Chad and JT returned to court to express their disappointment and disillusionment with the American political machine. Two minutes of pure liquid gold ensued:
