Laura Davies cruises to victory in US Senior Women’s Open
WHEATON, Ill. (AP) Laura Davies immediately recognized the significance of having her name inscribed on the first U.S. Senior Women’s Open trophy.
It might be a long time before anyone secures the title as emphatically as Davies did.
Davies went virtually unchallenged in Sunday’s final round of the inaugural USGA championship for women 50 and older, claiming the title by 10 strokes over Juli Inkster.
”It’s great seeing this (trophy) paraded down for the very first time and I get my name on it first, you know?” Davies said. ”This championship will be played for many years and there will only be one first winner – obviously a proud moment for me to win that.”
The 54-year-old Davies shot a 5-under 68 to finish at 16-under 276 at Chicago Golf Club.
It was the English player’s 85th career win, and she felt the pressure even though her lead was rarely in danger.
”I haven’t won for eight years – my last win was India, 2010,” Davies said. ”So that’s the pressure you’re playing under, whe..
Stone narrowly misses out on 1st 59 in European Tour history
GULLANE, Scotland (AP) The elusive round of 59 on the European Tour will have to wait for another tournament.
South African golfer Brandon Stone had an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 18 at the Scottish Open on Sunday for the first sub-60 round in the 46-year history of the European Tour. He narrowly missed it left.
Stone tapped in for a 10-under 60, for the 19th round of 60 on the tour. Eighteen players have done so, with Darren Clarke achieving it twice.
Stone was on course to win the Scottish Open after reaching 20-under par, which left him four shots clear in the clubhouse.
Stone narrowly misses out on 1st 59 in European Tour history
GULLANE, Scotland (AP) Brandon Stone sank to his haunches, clasped his face and dropped his putter in despair after coming within inches of being the first player to shoot a round of 59 on the European Tour.
It wasn’t all bad for the South African golfer.
Stone’s 10-under 60 secured a four-shot victory at the Scottish Open on Sunday, earning him a third professional title of his career – the first outside his native country – and the bonus prize of a qualifying spot in next week’s British Open just up the east coast at Carnoustie.
He left the Gullane links with a slight sense of regret, though.
Stone’s approach to the 18th green skipped on and came to rest about 8 feet from the hole. As he walked up to the green, he looked at a scoreboard for the first time all day, totted up the birdies – and eagle – that he’d made and then looked at his caddy, Teagan Moore.
”He went, `Yeah, we’ve got a shot at a 59,”’ Stone said.
He let his caddy read the line – ”This is completely up to you,” ..
Watch T.J. Oshie sink a long putt while drinking from a beer helmet at celebrity golf tournament
There's some serious golf being played by celebrities at the American Century Championship this week. Just don't put T.J. Oshie in that group.

Nowhere near the top of the leader board at Lake Tahoe, Oshie decided to put on a beer helmet during Saturday's second round. And perhaps a couple of brews is exactly what he needed to loosen up his putting stroke. Check out this smooth par putt:

Talk about draining one, am I right? Sorry, I'll show myself out now. . .
Of course, no matter how he plays, this entire summer is a celebration for Oshie following his Washington Capitals winning the Stanley Cup last month. And we've already seen the NHL star get creative when it comes to consuming beer:

Live it up, T.J. Live it up.

France’s Alex Levy sees French World Cup goal in players lounge at Scottish Open, celebrates accordingly
Finishing your round up before the leaders even tee off usually means you haven't had the best of weeks. This was the case at the Scottish Open for France's Alex Levy, who carded a final-round 71, which currently has him at T-55. While we're sure he would have liked to be in contention, Levy picked a good week not to be, because it meant he got to watch his home country in the World Cup final.

In the players lounge at Gullane Golf Club, cameras captured Levy watching France take on Croatia in Russia, and like any sports fan, he was on the edge of his seat. With the game tied 1-1 late in the first half, France got a penalty kick for a Croatian hand ball and Antoine Griezmann capitalized, giving France a 2-1 lead. Levy celebrated accordingly:

Not sure if this dance has a name, but it's the same one Griezmann was doing after scoring the go-ahead goal, and Levy pre..
Carnoustie presents a fast, brown look for British Open
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) Jon Rahm had heard about a dry summer in Scotland. It didn’t really hit home until he checked into the Carnoustie Golf Hotel and caught his first glimpse of the course with a reputation as the toughest links in golf.
”I forgot the fact the R&A lets Mother Nature set up the course,” he said Sunday. ”It wasn’t until I got to my hotel room when I looked out and said, `This is baked. This is brown.’ I’m just glad they water the greens.”
This is a different look than the previous two times the British Open came to Carnoustie.
The rough was dense, thick and crowded the narrow fairways in 1999. It was wet and long in 2007. It is bone dry this year, the grass brown on the fairways, almost the same color as the sand filling some of the divots. The ball is running forever.
Rahm said he can still see why the links has been nicknamed ”Car-nasty.”
”But I think with this year’s setup – the lack of rain, the fairways being firm, the fescue not being thick at all – it al..
Daring golf trick shot shows tremendous trust between brother and sister
There are the kinds of lame trust exercises you see at corporate retreats, and then there's the trick shot a young brother and sister pulled. In an ode to William Tell, 8-year-old Freddie Wilcock knocked an apple off his sibling's head with a golf ball. A foam golf ball. At least, we hope it was a foam golf ball.
Daly withdraws from British Open
CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) John Daly is missing the British Open for only the fourth time since he first became eligible as a surprise major champion.
Daly has notified the R&A that he is withdrawing because of a knee injury. Daly also cited his knee injury in asking for a cart at the U.S. Senior Open, a request that was denied. He played the following week at The Greenbrier on the PGA Tour and missed the cut.
He was replaced by former PGA champion Keegan Bradley.
Daly won the Open in 1995 at St. Andrews in a playoff over Costantino Rocca. He first became eligible in 1992, a year after he won the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick as the ninth alternate.
Daly has not made the cut at the Open since 2010.
