Scott McCarron wins Champions event in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Scott McCarron won the American Family Insurance Championship on Sunday, closing with an 8-under 64 for a one-stroke victory over hometown player Jerry Kelly.

The 52-year-old McCarron birdied Nos. 14-16 and parred the final two to hold on for his first victory of the season and seventh in three years on the PGA Tour Champions. He finished at 15-under 201 at University Ridge.

”All week, I drove the ball really well and I was hitting a lot of good iron shots,” McCarron said. ”I hit a lot of greens. I think I made one bogey all week and that was early on Friday. Just missed a short putt, one of the par 3s and made bogey. Other than that, I really didn’t have any other opportunities to make bogeys. I just kept putting myself in play.”

England’s Matt Wallace wins BMW International Open by 1 shot

PULHEIM, Germany (AP) England’s Matt Wallace shot a 7-under 65 to hold off a record-breaking charge from Thorbjorn Olesen and win the BMW International Open on Sunday.

”I want to keep building on this,” Wallace said after his third European Tour win. ”Obviously this gives me a lot of confidence to go on and play well and I want to kick on and hopefully do this in the bigger events from now on.”

Olesen had played himself into contention with the lowest round in tournament history, with nine birdies and an eagle for an 11-under 61. It was the lowest round of his European Tour career and it gave the Dane a three-shot lead before the final group had even teed off.

”I was just trying today to go out there and build on my game, see if I could shoot a low score,” Olesen said. ”Obviously as the round pro..

Lee, Hataoka tied after 2 rounds at NW Arkansas Championship

ROGERS, Ark. (AP) Minjee Lee wasn’t all that concerned when she missed her first cut of the year this month at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

The ninth-ranked Australian has certainly looked at ease and back in form at Pinnacle Country Club in her first event since then.

Lee and Japan’s Nasa Hataoka each shot 6-under 65 on Saturday to share the second-round lead in the NW Arkansas Championship 13-under 129. Lee is chasing her fifth victory since turning pro three years ago. It’s also an opportunity to put any lingering frustration over that missed cut two weeks ago behind her for good.

Article continues below …

”I didn’t particularly hit it bad, even though I missed the cut at ShopRite, I just didn’t really hole any putts,” Lee said. ”I’d been hitting it pretty solid going into that tournament and even into this tournament, too. Just to see a couple putts roll in has been nice.”

The 22-year-old Lee needed only 24 putts during her opening 64 on Friday, helping her to match the low ro..

Paul Casey shoots 62 to take 4-shot lead in Travelers

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) Paul Casey has come close each of the three previous times he has played in Connecticut. He has a great chance to break through Sunday in the Travelers Championship.

The Englishman had six birdies and an eagle – at the signature par-4 15th hole – where he hit his tee shot onto the green and then sank a 23-foot putt. He broke out of the pack hitting all 18 greens and has a streak of 23 straight heading into Sunday. He was at 16-under 194.

”It was clinical,” he said. ”I did everything I wanted to do. I can’t do any more than that.”

Casey was second here during his first visit in 2015, came in 17th a year later and had a fifth-place finish in Cromwell a year ago.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wearing a green shirt in a nod to Mexico’s soccer team, Esteban Toledo birdied four of the last six holes Saturday for a 6-under 66 and the lead in the American Family Insurance Championship.

Five strokes behind tournament host Steve Stricker after an opening 69 in rain Friday at University Ridge, the 55-year-old Mexican player had six birdies in a bogey-free round to reach 9-under 135.

”I wear this shirt three days ago and I wash it myself last night so I can wear green today,” Toledo said. ”It worked. I wish I can wear this tomorrow, but tomorrow I’m coming in black and white.”

This fan’s Harry Potter-themed shout for Lanto Griffin at the Travelers Championship is worthy of praise

Last Sunday afternoon at the U.S. Open I made my way to the first tee at Shinnecock looking to catch the Henrik Stenson/Justin Rose pairing as they teed off in the final round. Once they arrived, I positioned myself left of the tee box and kneeled down so the fans behind me could see the two major champions begin their round. That's when I heard a conversation between two friends directly over my left shoulder that made my eyes roll to the back of my head.
“Dude, I have the broadcast on in my headphones, I can hear what's going on,” said the one guy to his friend. OK, that's fine, I thought. What golf diehard wouldn't want to hear what else is going on out on the course that they can't see? Sounds like a novel idea now that I thought about it.
Yeah, that wasn't the case with these two.
Once Stenson struck his tee shot, the other fan screamed something incredibly stupid, just as many New York fans did throughout the week. He did the same for Rose. Cringewor..

Lopez shoots 63 to lead LPGA’s NW Arkansas Championship

ROGERS, Ark. (AP) Since its first year on the LPGA Tour in 2007, the crowds at the NW Arkansas Championship have belonged to Stacy Lewis.

Another former University of Arkansas star staked her claim as the hometown favorite Friday when Gaby Lopez shot a career-low 8-under 63 to take the first-round lead at Pinnacle Country Club.

Like Lewis, the two-time winner of the tournament, Lopez starred as a three-time All-American for the Razorbacks before joining the LPGA Tour in 2016. Despite flashes of potential, Lopez had yet to join Lewis among the ranks of the world’s best – missing the cut in her last two tournaments and entering this week ranked 136th in the world.

For a day, at least, the Mexican standout felt right at home atop the leaderboard in her adopted home state.

”I feel like home,” Lopez said. ”I feel so, so comfortable out here, because I feel that everyone and every single person out here is just rooting for us.”
