Tiger Woods goes full Bond-villain, pulls up to U.S. Open in $20 million yacht

Carlos MarinoAt this point you'd think Tiger Woods would be tired of power moves, maybe even a little bored, considering he spent nearly 20 years flexing on his peers Thursday-Sunday, February-October. The 2018 Tiger is a new Tiger, too—a kinder, softer, gentler apex predator with some real, capital-P Perspective. But it's U.S. Open week—the 10th since his dazzling, peg-legged battle with professional belt-buckle collector Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines—and if you thought Tiger was just gonna roll up to Shinnie in the ol' Buick and get to work, you were wrong. Very, very wrong.
Instead, Tiger has announced his presence at this year's U.S. Open with all the subtlety of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, docking his $20-million-dollar, 155-foot yacht off the tip of Montauk on Tuesday. The fittingly titled “Privacy” will reportedly serve as Tiger's base of operations as he hosts a high stakes poker game for the world's most powerful criminals vies for his first major victo..

Tiger Woods’ biggest fan might be a fellow PGA Tour pro

Tiger Woods' latest comeback has thrilled golf fans far and wide, but some of his biggest supporters are golfers who are now teeing it up on the PGA Tour themselves. From Sam Burns at the Honda Classic to Macckenzie Hughes at the Players, it seems Woods gets paired with a young star who grew up idolizing the 14-time major champ each week, and Sunday at the Memorial was no different. Except now, we may have finally identified the world's biggest Tiger Woods fan.
Whee Kim wound up drawing a final-round tee time with Tiger, and boy, did he savor it — even if neither played particularly well. Woods' 72 nipped Kim's 73 as both fell out of the top 10. Check out the photo with Woods Kim posted on Sunday night — and read the entire caption that went with it:

Very cool.
“He's still alive and he's still the greatest,” Kim writes. “It'll never change.” Love it. And that last line seems to be a reference to Woods' legendary dawn pa..

Missed Connection: Padres fan who caught a foul ball in her beer and chugged it last night

To the Petco Park stranger who caught a foul ball in your beer last night and then chugged it in front of the entire stadium, I just wanted to say hi. I think I could love you to the top of the Western Metal Supply Co. building and back again. To the bottom of that Ballast Point, golden like Tony Gwynn's glove in the morning dew. Like Ron Burgundy loves Veronica Corningstone. I could even love that ball, covered in grit and sweat and hops, splashing forever into my Midsummer Night's Dream. You spilled a little, but that's OK. Nobody's perfect and neither am I. Really hope you see this, but if not, that's OK too.
P.S. I know this is crazy, but…

High school golfer self-reports violation, loses state title

DELL RAPIDS, S.D. (AP) A South Dakota high school golfer cost herself and her team a state championship when she self-reported an error she’d made on her scorecard.

Sioux Falls Christian won the Class A girls state golf tournament on Tuesday, with senior Kate Wynja finishing first overall for the second year in a row. Wynja, who finished several shots ahead, realized she’d submitted an incorrect scorecard, crediting herself with a 4 on No. 18 instead of a 5.

”I knew I needed to tell them,” Wynja told the Argus Leader . ”It was really sad, mostly because I knew what the result would be. I knew that I would be disqualified, and it broke my heart for the team. But I knew I couldn’t leave without saying something.”

She and her coach reported the violation to tournament directors, who had no choice but to disqualify her. That also meant her team finished second, not first.

Dan Swartos, a tournament director, called the situation ”awful.”

”I have so much res..

NHL ref, cancer survivor, and total legend qualifies for 2018 U.S. Open

Icon SportswireNot all heroes wear capes, but for Garrett Rank—NHL referee, certified badass, and probable off-hours crime fighter—that's because it's really tough to skate while wearing a velour parachute. Rank makes his heroism show in other ways, however. First of all, he's an NHL ref, which is just a fancy term for “pain magnet.” Second, he battled and beat testicular cancer back in 2011. Finally, he just qualified for the FREAKIN' U.S. OPEN (AKA your personal dream, but hey, let's not make this about you).
Rank qualified for the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills by shooting back-to-back 71s during a 36-hole qualifying event at Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Georgia on Monday. On the bag for Rank was fellow NHL ref Daniel O'Rourke, because hockey guys have to stick together, obviously.
The moment is sure to be intimidating for Rank, but he's not totally, er, green. Rank has finished runner-up at the U.S. Open Mid-Amateur Championship, 77th in the C..
