The cancelation of Serena vs. Sharapova is the cruel sports tease of the week

Mike HewittThis morning, I'm one devastated tennis fan. Life is better when there's a grand slam happening, so there should be nothing to complain about on the second Monday of the French Open. And yet, the best match-up of the whole fortnight—Serena Williams vs. Maria Sharapova—has been canceled due to Serena's arm injury.
We needed this. It was going to be a bitter grudge match. It was going to be Sharapova's best chance to beat Serena in 18 matches, and there's an angry part of me that thinks Serena knew this, and hates Sharapova so much that she dodged her. I know that's ridiculous, and wrong, but this is what happens to my brain when a match like this is stolen from me.
Let me explain what we're missing, and why this is so cruel.
It starts with a story that's extremely sad. When Maria Sharapova was 12 years old, she trained at an academy in Florida. One day, the Williams sisters were scheduled to stop by for a practice session. It was a big ..

Incredible footage following J.R. Smith’s NBA Finals fail shows Cavs had NO chance in OT

The memes of an incredulous LeBron James gesturing at J.R. Smith following his NBA Finals fail have become more ubiquitous than Geico commercials. Move over, Crying Jordan, you have been replaced. But as many times as you've seen the boneheaded play at the end of Game 1, this video of what happened after is a must see. Well, maybe not if you're a Cavs fan. Then it's tough to watch.
RELATED: The “J.R. Smith Challenge” is here, and it's spectacular
Check out the incredible footage of the two-and-a-half minutes following Smith forgetting the score and dribbling out the clock. Let's just say there wasn't a whole lot of talking on that Cavs bench.

About the only thing you can see someone saying is LeBron asking head coach Ty Lue (What took him so long to get there, by the way! You've got to rally your troops!) “Did we have no timeouts?” When Lue tells him they did have a timeout, LeBron look..

NEW YORK (AP) The PGA Tour broadened its international reach Monday in a $2 billion agreement with Discovery Inc., to deliver golf content directly to consumers in 220 markets outside the United States over the next 12 years.

Nine months after the PGA Tour chose not to opt out early of its U.S. network deals, it formed an alliance to turn over its content outside of the U.S. to Discovery, a company that already is reaching audiences around the world through its Eurosport network and other channels.

”This puts us in a place that we could never get to on our own,” he ..

Jutanugarn survives collapses and wins US Women’s Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Ariya Jutanugarn lost a seven-shot lead on the back nine, stayed alive with a par in the two-hole playoff and saved par with a bunker shot to win on the fourth playoff hole and capture the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday at Shoal Creek.

Jutanugarn appeared to have her second major sewn up when she shot 32 on the front nine to stretch her lead to seven shots. But the 22-year-old Thai began the back nine with a triple bogey, and then closed with back-to-back bogeys for a 1-over 73.

That put her in a two-hole playoff with Hyo-Joo Kim, who shot 5-under 67.

Article continues below …

This is the first time the USGA has gone to a two-hole aggregate playoff, and Kim quickly took command by rolling in a long birdie putt on the 14th hole. Returning to the 18th, Jutanugarn went over the green while Kim found a bunker. Kim blasted out to 12 feet and failed to save par – her only bogey Sunday – and Jutanugarn chipped about 5 feet by the hole and made par to send the playoff ..
