Olesen edges home favorite Molinari to win Italian Open

BRESCIA, Italy (AP) Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark sunk a 10-foot putt on the final hole to win the Italian Open on Sunday and avoid a playoff with home favorite Francesco Molinari.

Olesen finished one stroke ahead of the Italian for his fifth European Tour victory and first Rolex Series win.

When Olesen stepped up to the tee at the par-4 18th at Gardagolf Country Club, he held a two-stroke lead over Molinari.

But ahead on the green, Molinari sunk a 30-foot putt for birdie to slice the lead to one stroke and prompt roars from the crowd. Then Olesen hit his second shot into a green-side bunker after driving into the rough.

Olesen held his nerve, however, and got up and down.

”I knew from the start it was going to be tight,” said Olesen, who entered the final round tied with Molinari one stroke behind Lee Slattery.

”I never had that final putt to win. That’s why this one feels so amazing,” Olesen added.

Molinari, the 2006 Italian Open winner, was coming o..

Jace “Jumbo” Chamberlain’s walk-off dinger for Cal State Fullerton is your sports highlight of the weekend

With all the sports that are sports-ing right now, it's easy to forget that the men's College World Series, one of the more underrated sports events of the summer, is well underway. As we saw with that Ole Miss-Georgia SEC Championship elimination game, the college game can be wildly entertaining, and probably doesn't get the attention it deserves.

That's why we all missed what might be the sports highlight of the weekend late on Saturday night in Palo Alto, when Jace “Jumbo” Chamberlain came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth for Cal State Fullerton. Tied at one against No. 2 overall-seeded Stanford with two outs, the 6'4, 240-pound freshman first baseman, who had not hit a homer 88 at-bats into his college career, stepped to the dish and answered the bell by cranking one to the moon and providing an all-time celebration afterwards:

Jutanugarn shoots 67, climbs into lead at US Women’s Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Ariya Jutanugarn used two quick birdies at the U.S. Women’s Open to put the pressure on leader Sarah Jane Smith.

With the momentum secured, the 22-year-old from Thailand was far from finished.

Jutanugarn shot a 5-under 67 in the third round Saturday, turning a three-shot deficit into a four-shot lead and creating an excellent opportunity to win her second major championship. Even Smith, who shot a 74 to fall back to second place, was impressed by Jutanugarn’s relentless surge.

”She’s a spectacular player, obviously,” Smith said. ”Her length is just one part of her game. She hits it a long way, but her short game is impeccable. She rolls the ball beautifully.

”She’s just the whole package.”

Jutanugarn certainly looked like it on Saturday, combining long drives with a solid short game and putting. She made six birdies and just one bogey, rarely encountering serious trouble. When asked if her game had any current weaknesses, she imme..

Cantlay’s ace helps put him among leaders in Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) Patrick Cantlay didn’t manage a hole-in-one through more than three dozen PGA Tour starts before this season. Now he has two.

Cantlay’s ace Saturday at the Memorial helped him to a 6-under 66 and left him in a great spot heading into the final day, one shot behind leader Bryson DeChambeau.

He used a 7-iron on the 185-yard, par-3 eighth. The ball landed just short of the pin and plopped in on the second bounce.

”It was perfect,” he said.

The 26-year-old former UCLA star got his first ace at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, on the 11th hole at Monterey Peninsula.

Cantlay added an eagle on the 15th Saturday to go along with four birdies.

”I really like the place, I like fast greens, and I like the premium the golf course sets for hitting the ball in the fairway,” he said.

He got his first career win in Las Vegas last November.

”After winning the first time, it’s kind of like breaking the seal, and now I feel I can go out and ..

DeChambeau takes 1-shot lead as Woods lurks at Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) Bryson DeChambeau made birdies on two of the toughest holes for a 6-under 66 to take a one-shot lead into a final round at the Memorial that features Tiger Woods in contention at Muirfield Village for the first time in six years.

Woods let another great round get away by missing short putts, had to settle for a 68 and was five shots behind.

He wasn’t alone.

DeChambeau missed 3-foot birdie putts on the ninth and 15th holes. But he poured it on at the end to lead by one shot over Patrick Cantlay (66), Kyle Stanley and 19-year-old Joaquin Niemann of Chile, who played in the last group and each had 70.

DeChambeau was at 14-under 202 on a soft course vulnerable to low scores.
