The time Nicklaus bet on himself at a US Open

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) Jack Nicklaus had small wagers in practice rounds during his time on the PGA Tour, just like everyone else. Some players before his time made more money in practice round bets than at the tournament when the prize money was small.

But he says he never had a wager with another player during a tournament.

He recalled only one time when he had money riding on the outcome, and he was still an amateur.

”The only wager I ever had was the 1960 U.S. Open,” Nicklaus said. ”It was a month before I was getting married. I was the U.S. Amateur champion and my dad said, `Hey, they got you at 35-1. You want some of that?’ I said, `I’ll have $20.’ He said, `You want place and show?’ I said, `I’m not here to place and show.”’

He was right about that.

Nicklaus had a chance to win until missing short putts down the stretch. He was paired the final round with Ben Hogan, who also had a chance to win until he hit into the water on the 17th hole. Arnold Pal..

Trump to hold a sports field day at the White House

WASHINGTON (AP) President Donald Trump wants to reverse a trend of fewer children participating in sports and make youth sports more accessible to economically disadvantaged students.

The White House is promoting the goals of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition on Wednesday and will hold a field day with the president on the South Lawn. Trump is expected to join athletes at stations that will include flag football, baseball, volleyball, golf, soccer and track and field.

Trump issued an executive order in February refocusing the council on youth sports as opposed to President Barack Obama’s emphasis on fitness and healthy eating. Trump, who played high school sports and is a competitive golfer, has sought to work with groups in the public and private sectors to address declining participation in youth sports.

Column: Woods has come a long way from Memorial Day arrest

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) Tiger Woods has made plenty of progress in his return to golf, especially in the last three months.

Starting with the Honda Classic, 19 of his 24 rounds have been at par or better. Four of the last six times on Sunday, he has gone into the final round with at least a remote hope of winning. At two tournaments, he was within one shot of the lead over the final three holes.

But that’s not the best measure of progress.

Think back to a year ago this week.

Just over a month after he had back surgery for the fourth time, the image of Woods in a red shirt charging to victory was replaced by a mug shot from a Florida jail after his arrest on a DUI charge in the early morning hours of Memorial Day.

He had a white shirt and hollow eyes.

He had a problem with painkillers. A mixture of them were in his system after police found him asleep behind the wheel of his car, which was parked awkwardly on the side of the road, the motor running and a bli..

The scenes from this year’s Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling are pure chaos

Scott BarbourIf you've never heard of the Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling and Wake, just picture the most English sport you can imagine, add a pinch of American redneck and a dash of Jackass, and you're on the right track. Hosted on England's Spring Bank Holiday for as long as anyone cares to remember, the infamous cheese roll is a semi-organized free-for-all in which intrepid residents of Brockworth are joined by dairy denizens from around the world to chase a nine-pound wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down the steepest hill you've ever seen.
Chaos and concussions invariably ensue, and this year—despite humanity's growing emphasis on NOT bruising your brain—was more of the same gloriously random stupidity. OPEN THE FLOODGATES, JEEVES:

This ’90s sitcom parody will ALMOST make you excited for Cavs vs. Warriors vol. 4

Honestly, as impressive and unprecedented and blah blah blah as the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors meeting in the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive season is, it is also the likeliest of all available outcomes, the closest thing you can get to a foregone conclusion in sports (sorry, LeBron), and probably the worst finals matchup since whenever the Orlando Magic last made it.
But, if there's one thing that could possibly get us psyched for yet another bout of basketball deja vu, it's this NBA Finals hype video done in the style of a '90s sitcom intro, which CBS Sports lovingly graced Instagram with last night immediately following the Warriors' Game 7 victory almost as if they knew that's what was going to happen all along:

A little bit Fresh Prince, and a little bit Full House, this story of two rival families trying to navigate life in the Bay Area stars LeBron James and Steph Curry as competitive-to-a-fault patriarc..
