Phil Mickelson’s glorious calves, J.B. Holmes’ glacial pace, and one tour pro’s creative way to combat slow play

Welcome to another edition of The Grind, where we're impressed by the power of Golf Twitter. Within a matter of days, Matt Kuchar was shamed into paying an extra $45,000 to the caddie who helped him win in November, and J.B. Holmes was shamed into, well, nothing actually. But boy, did he get roasted over his pace of play during his Genesis Open victory. There were so many great tweets, but this one topped them all:

Holmes found out that it’s easier to overcome TWO brain surgeries than one highly publicized slow play incident. Golf fans, still with their pitchforks out from J.B.’s infamous four-minute layup last year at Torrey Pines, turned on the Kentuckian worse than Papa John on Louisville basketball. But sadly, Golf Twitter couldn’t get Holmes to play faster—or the PGA Tour to enforce what is essentially, a worthless slow play rule. Keep it up, though, people. Change will (hopefully) come. Phil Mickelson’s calves are the most improbable golf trend electrifying the Internet—but we’re really impressed

The PGA Tour's new rule, announced on Monday in Mexico and Puerto Rico, allowing players to wear shorts during practice rounds and pro-ams, has already had an expected result. Phil Mickelson's calves are now trending on social media—who knew Lefty's legs would have the Internet buzzing?
We've seen Mickelson's impressive fitness translate to impressive results this season, as the 48-year-old ranks inside the top 30 in driving distance and used that added length to help him win two weeks ago at the AT&T Pebble Beach. What golf fans couldn't have gleaned from watching Lefty on tour is that his calf muscles also have impressive bulk. Thanks to the PGA Tour allowing shorts in the lead up to this week's WGC-Mexico Championship, we have eyes on Lefty's glorious warlocks.

The NBA 3-Point Contest is the best part of All-Star Weekend, and Craig Hodges is still the king

Jon SoohooOn Saturday night, Nets sharpshooter Joe Harris edged Steph Curry, the greatest shooter in world history, to win the 2019 NBA three-point shootout in Charlotte. You can watch the highlights here, and I recommend it—it's fun:
The 3-point contest, which began in 1986, is the best event of All-Star weekend, and anyone who claims that the dunk contest or the game itself is better…well, they're wrong. The contest also has a fascinating history, and one thing to note when comparing results across the years is that the format has changed. In the past, each of the five racks had one “money ball” worth two points, and four “normal” balls worth one point apiece, but now the shooters get one rack full of money balls. Which means, of course, that overall scores are higher today.
One thing that hasn't changed, though, is the number of total shots: With five racks of five balls each, shooters have always had 25 chances, and 60 seconds to make their way around the arc. Whic..
