Leishman shoots 61 in debut of new course at Byron Nelson

DALLAS (AP) Marc Leishman enjoyed the old home of the AT&T Byron Nelson as much as anyone, considering he made the last nine trips there and had one of the best scoring averages in tournament history.

The Australian might take a liking to the new place as well.

Leishman shot a 10-under 61 on the links-style Trinity Forest course to take the first-round lead Thursday and was eight shots clear of hometown star Jordan Spieth in the event that returned to Dallas after 35 years at the TPC Four Seasons in suburban Irving.

Considering the criticisms of Trinity Forest from others – mentioned vaguely by players who did show up – Leishman wouldn’t have needed much to join that chorus after a history of high finishes in Irving despite a couple of recent missed cuts.

Instead, Leishman opened with an eagle, started the back nine with three straight birdies and reached 9 under with another eagle at the 14th.

The 34-year-old, a three-time PGA Tour winner, had chances..

5 share LPGA lead after opening 65s at Kingsmill

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) Annie Park turned a blistering stretch on the back nine into a mistake-free 6-under 65 and a share of the first-round lead on a crowded leaderboard Thursday at the Kingsmill Championship.

Jessica Korda, Azahara Munoz, In Gee Chun and Jaye Marie Green also shot 65. Park, Korda and Munoz played morning rounds in mild conditions, while Chun and Green played in rain that is expected to also be a factor Friday and Saturday on the resort’s already-soggy River Course.

Park, playing in just her third tour event of the season and seeking her first career victory, was 2 under when she hit the flag and birdied the par 4 14th hole. She then nearly holed her second shot on the par-5 15th after hitting ”an OK 3-wood” that left her with a short eagle putt, and also birdied the par-4 16th.

”Overall, I had a great day,” she said. ”I hit some good shots. Lucky enough, I had some short birdie putts, short eagle putt, and that helps.”

Munoz had seven..

93-year-old makes first hole-in-one in the last round of his life

To all cursed hackers that have never recorded a hole-in-one, Ben Bender is proof that you should never lose the faith.
According to the Zanesville Times Recorder, Bender, a 93-year-old Ohioan, made his first ace in seven decades of playing golf at Green Valley (Ohio) Golf Club.
“I'd come close to some hole-in-ones, but this one was level on the green before it curved towards the hole and went in,” Bender told the Times Recorder. “I was in awe watching it.”
And, according to Bender, it came in the final round of his life.
“I played a few more holes, but my hips were hurting and I had to stop,” Bender said. “It seemed the Lord knew this was my last round so he gave me a hole-in-one.”
Bender began playing when he bought a set of Wilson's and a golf bag for $50. He got as low as a 3 handicap, although admitted his game has struggled as of late. Making his feat that much sweeter.
“I was lucky to play golf this long, but I never expected (a hole-in-one),” Bender said. “It was the ..

Busch Gardens and SeaWorld to ease summer vacation stress with free beer

TORU YAMANAKAIf Clark Griswold taught us one thing, it's that the idyllic summer vacation is nothing but an empty myth perpetuated by the likes of Chevrolet, South Dakota Tourism, and your friendly neighborhood travel agent for profit. But along the way—encased in your station wagon tomb somewhere between Dayton and Boise—you are liable to learn something about not only yourself, but maybe even your family too. Thankfully Mercifully, Anheuser-Busch seems to have to taken the teachings of Griswold to heart, announcing a spectacular new attraction for their theme-park lynchpins Busch Gardens and SeaWorld this summer:
14 oz of crisp, cool, refreshing beer.
FacebookPinterestThat's right, for the first time since 2009, when every business in America suddenly stopped doing anything remotely fun or good for some weird reason, free suds are returning to parental torture camps across the American southeast. Beginning May 1st and ending August 5th, every adult that steps through the do..

Miguel Angel Jimenez leads Regions Tradition

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Miguel Angel Jimenez matched the course record with an 8-under 64 on Thursday to take the first-round lead in the Regions Tradition, the first of the PGA Tour Champions’ five major championships.

Jimenez birdied the first four holes and broke the front-nine record at 6-under 30 at Greystone Golf & Country Club. The Spaniard took the outright lead with a short birdie putt on No. 13 after a rain delay of 1 hour, 17 minutes.

Jimenez tied the course record set by Kenny Perry in the first round in 2016 and matched by Bernhard Langer in the final round a year ago. Jimenez also opened with a 64 in the Chubb Classic before finishing ninth.

”The only hole I didn’t play well, the 18th, but I missed my driver,” Jimenez said. ”We were rushed looking at the weather coming or not and the gusting wind started to come in and I rushed myself.”

Gene Sauers, Wes Short Jr., Jerry Kelly and Joe Durant were second at 66.

David Wells threw a perfect game 20 years ago — and I still can’t believe I was there

David SeeligI can’t believe I almost didn’t go. I shudder at that thought when I think back to the morning of May 17, 1998. I was your typical lazy high school sophomore getting even lazier with the end of the school year approaching, but turning down free tickets to a Yankees game? On a beautiful afternoon?
But there I was pacing around the den of my family’s house in Pelham, N.Y. I remember which room it was, because I loved that room. It’s where I watched the Yankees win the first World Series title of my lifetime in 1996 (Although I ran through the entire house screaming when Charlie Hayes settled under that final pop-out) and where I witnessed Tiger Woods win the Masters by 12 shots in 1997. It also had a really cool wet bar, which had my parents’ liquor collection displayed against the mirror behind it — but more importantly, had a mini-fridge that was always stocked with soda. I was an innocent 16-year-old, and again, I was also lazy. Why traipse all the way to Yankee Stadium wh..

Tennessee man finds 6 1/2 foot demon rattlesnake in his backyard

Nashville is one of the coolest cities in America right now, with a combination of country music, killer food, and a rapidly gentrifying culture propelling it up the national like-Austin-but-smaller power rankings. That all came screeching to a halt on Wednesday, however, when a local man from adjacent Cheatham County discovered a SIX-AND-ONE-HALF-FOOT POISONOUS RATTLESNAKE FROM HELL DEVOURING A SQUIRREL IN HIS BACKYARD. Unpack the U-Haul, honey. We aren't setting foot within 500 miles of the Mason-Dixon ever again.
FacebookPinterestSo OK, it's not the greatest the photo in the world, but it's still fairly obvious that A. This is definitely a snake and B. We want absolutely nothing to do it with it. What you can't discern from the shot, presumably sent to WATE 6 from an AOL email address on good ol' fashioned Appalachian dial-up, is that the snake is a timber rattler, an endangered species that you are definitely not allowed to just kill with a shovel without f..

The Phoenix Suns are not doing a great job of disguising their plans for the No. 1 NBA Draft pick

Sonia Canada(Photo by Sonia Canada/Getty Images)Deandre Ayton thinks he should go No. 1 to the Phoenix Suns in next month's NBA Draft, and with good reason. The 19-year-old big man is considered the top prospect by most evaluation outlets, would be a nice down-low complement to guard Devin Booker, and serves as the sought-after hometown narrative, as Ayton played his college ball down the road for the Arizona Wildcats. Unfortunately for Ayton, the Suns seem to be sending strong signals they're going in another direction.
For one, the Suns pegged Igor Kokoskov as the team's new head coach. Though he has been an assistant on six different NBA teams—including a five-year stint on the Phoenix bench from 2008 to 2013—he also served as the Slovenia national head coach. Important, given the No. 2 rated prospect in the draft, Luka Dončić, played for the Slovenian club the past two years. And Kokoskov is not short on praise for the point guard.
“We call him wunderkind,” Kokoskov ..
