Langer seeks third straight Regions Tradition victory
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) Bernhard Langer is trying to do something even Jack Nicklaus couldn’t quite pull off.
Langer enters the Regions Tradition starting Thursday at Greystone Golf & Country Club aiming to become the first to win the PGA Tour Champions major three years in a row since the event began in 1989.
”I love this golf course,” he said. ”It’s very challenging and demanding at times, and then there’s a couple of holes that are gettable. But there’s some shots you really have to pull it off. You’ve got to be totally committed and hit really solid, proper golf shots. Otherwise you end up in the water or even other places. It will show up on your scorecard.

”So for some reason I’ve done well here the last couple years and hopefully that will continue.”
Nicklaus came awfully close to a three-peat. He twice won the Tradition consecutive years at Desert Mountain in Arizona, but Lee Trevino edged him by one shot in 1992 the first time he tried to make it..

Ever wanted to play golf with Charles Barkley? If you have deep pockets, here’s your chance
Stan BadzStan BadzA chance to see Charles Barkley's swing up-close? An opportunity perhaps equal parts entertaining and horrifying, but nonetheless, how many golfers get to say they teed it up with Sir Charles himself?
That chance is being offered through an auction by Charitybuzz, the site that hosts a bunch of charitable donations, and a campaign called Curates: Golf, presented by Audemars Piquet. Currently, the bid for a round of golf with Barkley is at $23,600, which includes a round of golf at either Druid Hills Golf Club or Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta, Ga., or The Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale. The winning bid is guaranteed three spots in a foursome with Barkley before May 2019.

Spieth headlines as hometown Byron Nelson changes venues
DALLAS (AP) Jordan Spieth didn’t try to sell his peers on joining him at a new links-style course for the 50th anniversary of his hometown AT&T Byron Nelson tournament.
The three-time major winner says he was honest when asked over the past year about the undulating layout, with no trees or water hazards, on what used to be a landfill a few miles south of downtown Dallas.
The fields weren’t great the past decade at the TPC Four Seasons resort in suburban Irving, the tournament’s home for 35 years. The return to Dallas at Trinity Forest Golf Club, named for the 6,000 acres of thick trees surrounding the course, didn’t do much to change that, at least for now.

”The most common question is, `What’s it like?”’ Spieth said. ”Pretty vague question but, you know, I say it’s very different. These are my words: It’s really fun as a member, as a change-of-pace kind of golf club.”

It was golf, as usual, more or less, on Wednesday at the Volcano Golf & Country Club, scene of a harrowing photo (above) of golfers playing on while a massive plume of ash from the Kilauea volcano appeared to be adjacent to the course.
The Getty Images photo was taken by Mario Tama on Tuesday and went viral on Twitter on Wednesday morning. A Golf Channel Tweet with the photo noted that, “Golfers, we're crazy.”

However, the plume of ash posed no threat to the golfers or the interlopers who drove to the course to get a closer look.
“We’re about two miles from the crater itself,” Ken Yoshitomi, who was working in the golf shop, said Wednesday morning. “But as long as the tradewinds are blowing southwest we’re fine. It does look close [in..

Glover’s wife blames attack on mother-in-law in 911 call
The wife of former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover made the first call to 911 and claimed she was attacked by her mother-in-law, according to a tape of the call released Wednesday that provided another bizarre twist in the wife’s arrest on a domestic violence charge.
Glover answered when the St. John’s Sheriff’s Office in Florida called back and said his wife was lying.
”Yeah, hi, I think we got our lines crossed here. This is the husband, the sane one of the bunch,” Glover says in a calm voice. ”My wife has called you. … Now she’s trying to blame it on my mother, which is not the case at all. … My wife has gone crazy.”

Actual historical figure Captain America now has his shield in The Smithsonian
Following a grueling, years-long battle with intergalactic warlord Thanos and still mourning the vaporization of exactly half of his closet friends and co-workers, actual historic figure Steve Rogers—AKA Captain America—was in Washington D.C. on Tuesday to watch as his shield was officially welcomed into The National Museum of American History.

A beacon of hope during the Battle of New York (look it up, kids) and the grisly days following the Sokovia disaster, the shield joins other priceless pieces of Americana—such as Elvis's UFO, Bigfoot's skeleton, and eating utensils carved out of coconuts from what is believed to be Tupac's former private island—in the museum's Division of Culture and the Arts wing. Smithsonian officials note that while the shield is not currently on display, those who would like to pay their respects should begin planning in advance, as hundreds of thousands of Americans are expected to descend upon the capital to pay..
